Coronally vs laterally advanced tunnel – what’s the difference?

In this short clip from our tunnel techniques course in Timișoara, Romania (Victor Babeș University), Dr Meizi Eliezer gives a quick visual explanation of the two main tunnel designs for recession coverage:

Coronally advanced tunnel – the flap is mobilised and moved upwards over the exposed root

Laterally positioned/closed tunnel – tissue is slid from a neighbouring area to cover the defect

This is just one highlight from a full training day on soft tissue management and recession surgery for dentists and residents.

Every doctor told this patient: “You need extractions.”
But before prosthodontic treatment, we stopped to think differently.

Instead of removing the teeth, we performed recession coverage with a connective tissue graft, preserving the patient’s natural teeth and creating a stable base for the prosthetic bridge.

Three years later — still healthy, functional, and no extraction needed.
