ARE YOU BEING NAUGHTY OR NICE TO YOUR TEETH ?

It’s not easy to stay healthy during the holidays. Sweets seem to appear everywhere you go, and with all of the present-wrapping and card-writing, there’s not much time to devote to you and your family’s health and well-being.

✓ Have a routine. Even on Christmas day when it’s time to open presents, it’s important to remember to brush and floss your teeth before opening gifts. Sure, the kids might make a fuss, but it will definitely be worth it in the long run.
✓ Be cautious of candy canes! Hard candy is tasty and readily available at the holidays from candy canes to peppermints, but they can crack your teeth.
✓ Don’t use your teeth as a tool – The holidays come with packages to open, tape to apply to presents and loads of other things you may be tempted to break open or cut with your teeth. Don’t do it! Using your teeth as a tool can cause chips and breaks.
✓ Don’t forget the dentist! The holidays can be a busy time, but that doesn’t mean you can forget about your teeth. If you are due for a teeth cleaning or need work done, don’t forget to visit your dentist in December.
✓ Drink water. You need a lot of energy for holiday activities, but avoid drinking sodas, sports drinks and juices with lots of sugar. Instead, drink water with fluoride in it to keep your teeth strong and healthy.
✓ Watch the Wine – If you like a nice red, be mindful of how this can stain your teeth. White wine is less of a risk to your white smile. If you do drink red, do so with food to mitigate how much of it gets on your teeth. Be sure to brush well if you do indulge in reds.
✓ Stock your stocking well – Christmas stockings are often chock full of sugary treats that can cause your kids to get cavities. Instead, consider eliminating candy altogether or stick to one sweet item. Also consider giving them a cool new toothbrush as part of their holiday loot.
✓ Dip in to veggies – At holiday events, skip the trays of Christmas cookies and brownies and instead fill your plate with veggies. Broccoli and carrots are great treats for your teeth because they’re loaded with Vitamin A which strengthens your enamel.
✓ Chomp on Cheese – Choose cheese to snack with if you’re drinking alcoholic drinks at parties. The pH balancing effects help neutralize the acid that’s in boozy beverages and the calcium is great for your tooth health as well.
✓ Fill up on Fruit – Instead of piling on sugary desserts at your holiday meal, turn to fruit instead. If you’re having a big dinner or party, rather than prepping a number of cakes and pies, try sticking to one sweet dessert and then prep a big fruit plate to satisfy your sweet tooth.
✓ Forego the grazing – At the holidays, we often have spreads of food left out all the time. Grazing all day can put your teeth at greater risk for decay. Instead of leaving out things to nosh on, only put out food at mealtimes and then stash the food away.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN from all the Staff at Swords Dentist

It is not just children who will enjoy the treats this Halloween. A large percentage of parents admit they eat their children’s Halloween treats. Some sweets have the potential to do more damage to teeth than others. Choose sweets that melt and disappear quickly. The longer teeth are exposed to sugar, the longer bacteria can feed on it, which could produce cavity-causing acid. The best way to protect teeth from decay is to have sweets in small portions at limited times, such as after a meal, as dessert, or at regular snack times. It is best to avoid letting children snack on sweets throughout the day. It is extremely important that children brush their teeth or at least rinse with water after eating sweets.
Hard sweets are tough on teeth because they tend to be sucked on for an extended period of time. In addition chomping down on hard candy can chip or break teeth. Chewy, sticky treats are particularly damaging because they are high in sugar, spend a prolonged amount of time stuck to teeth, and are more difficult for saliva to break down.

TV ADVERTS - SUGARY CEREALS
Parents and health experts have long been concerned about the impact of repeated adverts for cereal and other high-sugar foods on youngsters' eating habits.
Now research has uncovered the startling scale of the relationship between the number of ads seen by youngsters and the amount of the breakfast products they consumed as a result. Scientists found that for every ten cereal commercials a child under the age of five watched weekly, their consumption of the products jumped by almost 15 per cent.
Studies found the more adverts they see, the more sugary cereals they eat.
Among the worst offenders are
Kellogg's Frosties (37 per cent sugar) and Coco Pops (35 per cent sugar)
