What are dental cleanings (scale and polish) and why have them?

Dental cleanings involve removing plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. Your teeth are continually bathed in saliva which contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth. While this is a good thing, it also means that we tend to get a build-up of calcium deposits on the teeth. This chalky substance will eventually build up over time, like limescale in a pipe or kettle. Usually it is tooth coloured and can easily be mistaken as part of the teeth, but it also can vary from brown to black in colour.

If the scale, or calculus (tartar, as dentists like to call it) is allowed to accumulate on the teeth it will unfortunately provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to the gums. The purpose of the cleaning and polishing is basically to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care.

Taking care of your teeth and gums is extremely important. Our Dental hygienists can assist you in this. Dental hygienists treat gum diseases, which are becoming increasingly common and help people to maintain good oral health by educating them about how to prevent oral disease through care of their teeth and gums. The importance of good oral health is proving to have considerable influence over a persons general health and individuals who have regular (often 6 monthly) preventive dental hygiene treatment are overall healthier for it. Gum disease is usually initiated by the presence of plaque (sticky film on the teeth) around the teeth and gums. This plaque can lead to bad breath, bleeding gums, discoloured teeth, inflammation and swelling, pain, infection, and gum, bone and tooth loss. When the plaque is soft it can be removed by a polish which is done with a prophylatic paste. However if the plaque has calcified and formed hard masses i.e. calulus then a scale is required to remove it. There are direct links between gum disease and more serious health issues. In order to keep your gums healthy, we suggest you come in and see our hygienist for regular visits including the scale and polish (removal of plaque and mineralised plaue: tartar) and also education on the best way for you to take care of your teeth and gums at home.
