Say Hello to Rachel

If a warm Cavan accent has ever put you at ease at our front desk you've already met Rachel. πŸ’š

Rachel Murray is one of the friendly faces you'll see the moment you walk into Claremorris Dental Centre. She studied dental nursing for two years at Letterkenny IT, graduating in January 2021, and joined our team in February 2022.

What makes Rachel a bit special is that she genuinely loves both sides of the job one day she's chairside assisting the dentist, the next she's on reception helping you find an appointment that actually suits your week. Either way, she's usually the reason nervous patients leave saying 'that was grand, actually.'

Outside of work? You'll find her togged out for Gowna Ladies GAA back home, or catching up with friends and family. ⚽

We know Mayo is GAA country through and through give your club a shoutout in the comments and let's see who's represented! πŸ‘‡

Pink in the sink is so common that most people have stopped noticing it. But common isn't the same as normal. 🩸

If your gums bleed when you brush, they're telling you something. Here's our simple traffic-light guide:

🟒 GREEN β€” Healthy gums are pale pink, firm, and sit snugly around each tooth. They don't bleed when you brush or floss. This is the goal.

🟑 AMBER β€” Red, puffy gums that bleed during brushing are the early signs of gingivitis. The genuinely good news: at this stage it's completely reversible with better cleaning and a hygiene visit.

πŸ”΄ RED β€” Bleeding that persists, gums pulling away from teeth, persistent bad breath, or teeth that feel loose can signal gum disease that needs professional care the sooner, the simpler the treatment.

One more thing worth knowing, calmly and without any scaremongering: your gums are connected to the rest of you. Research links gum health with heart health, diabetes control, and pregnancy outcomes. Looking after your gums is looking after your whole body. ❀️

Nobody in Mayo is giving up the tea, and we would never ask you to. β˜•

But if you've noticed your smile losing a bit of its brightness, your daily cuppa might be part of the story. Here's what's actually happening: tea and coffee contain tannins, and tooth enamel is naturally porous so those tannins settle into the tiny surface pores over time. The result is that gradual yellowing no amount of scrubbing seems to shift.

The good news? You can limit the damage without giving anything up:

🍡 Sipping constantly all day stains more than drinking your tea with meals the enamel never gets a break

πŸ’§ A glass of water after your cuppa rinses tannins away before they settle

πŸͺ₯ Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing brushing straight after can wear softened enamel

✨ If you've had whitening, be extra careful with tea in the first 48 hours

And here's the honest bit: once stains have settled in, brushing at home won't remove them, but a professional hygiene visit will lift surface staining that's been building for years.

Tag the biggest tea drinker you know you know exactly who it is. πŸ‘‡β˜•

Meet the Team

The person behind the mask matters more than any piece of equipment in the room. 🦷

So today, we'd like you to properly meet Dr Alhasan Alshazli, general dentist here at Claremorris Dental Centre.

Dr Alhasan's path into dentistry is a little different, and it's exactly why patients trust him:

πŸŽ“ He started as a dental technician, graduating from the SIDON Institute in 2009, so he understands how your crowns, dentures and restorations are actually made

🦷 He then spent eight years studying dentistry at LNMU, building experience across a wide range of procedures and techniques

πŸ’‰ He's completed a Botox course in Dublin, so cosmetic and facial aesthetic treatments are available right here in Claremorris

✨ And he's genuinely committed to staying current with the latest technology and techniques, used with old-fashioned personal care

Whether it's a routine check-up or something more complex, Dr Alhasan's focus is the same: your comfort, your oral health, and a smile you're happy to share.

From Filling to Finish: Exactly What to Expect (No Surprises!) πŸ¦·πŸ’š

We know the fear of the unknown is often far bigger than the appointment itself, so let's walk through a filling together, minute by minute, so there are no surprises. 🀍 Because when you know exactly what's coming, that nervous knot in your stomach has a way of loosening all on its own.

Here's what your visit really looks like:

πŸͺ₯ First, a gentle check β€” your dentist looks at the tooth, talks you through what they see, and explains the best material to restore it. No rush, no jargon, just a plan you understand

πŸ’§ The numbing β€” you'll feel a tiny pinch and a slight scratch, then... nothing. We often use a numbing gel first, so even that is softer than you'd expect. Within a few minutes the tooth is completely asleep

🌬️ Removing the decay β€” you'll hear a soft buzzing or whirring and feel a little vibration or water spray, but no pain. This is simply the old decay being cleaned away

✨ Placing the filling β€” the durable material is shaped, set, and polished smooth. Most fillings take just 20–40 minutes from start to finish

🦷 All done! β€” your tooth is restored and strong again, often before you've even had time to worry

And the aftercare you'll actually want to know: the numbness usually fades over 1–3 hours, so wait until full feeling returns before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. A little sensitivity to hot or cold for a few days is completely normal. What's not normal and worth a quick call to us is sharp pain when biting or a filling that feels too "high." We're always here. πŸ’š

You're braver than you think, and you're in kind, gentle hands every step of the way.

How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Professionally Cleaned?

According to the World Health Organisation, oral diseases affect nearly 3.7 billion people worldwide, yet most oral health conditions are largely preventable and treatable in their early stages.

At Claremorris Dental Centre, we usually recommend dental cleaning or scaling every 6 months, but your ideal routine depends on your gum health, age, lifestyle, staining, restorations and oral health needs.

Some patients benefit from a professional dental clean every 3 to 4 months, especially when gum health needs closer care, while others need maintenance appointments to protect crowns, implants or orthodontic work.

A regular hygienist appointment helps remove plaque, tartar and stains, keeps gums healthier, and gives you a cleaner, fresher smile with advice tailored to you.
