Safety You Never See

It is the piece of equipment we hope we never have to use. And that is exactly why it had to go on the wall.

We have installed a dedicated emergency medical unit at Claremorris Dental Centre holding anaphylaxis treatment and salbutamol for asthma emergencies. It sits in plain sight, checked regularly, so that if a patient or a visitor has a severe allergic reaction or an asthma attack, the right treatment is seconds away rather than minutes.

Serious reactions in a dental setting are rare, but a good practice plans for the rare things. Alongside the unit, our team keeps up their medical emergency training every year, because equipment is only as useful as the people trained to use it.

Little of this is visible when you are sitting in the chair. We think it should be.

The Questions Nobody Asks

You have wondered at least one of these. Everybody has. So here are the honest answers to the questions patients whisper, or never ask at all.

🪥 Should I brush before I come in? Yes if you can, and no, we will not judge you if you forgot.

🧵 Can you tell I have not flossed? Usually, but we have seen it thousands of times. It is information for us, not a mark against you.

😮‍💨 Is my breath bad? We are not thinking about it. Truly.

✋ Can I ask you to stop mid-treatment? Always. Raise your hand and we stop. No explanation needed.

😢 What if I cry? Then you cry. Plenty of people do, and it is completely fine.

📅 Is it okay that I have not been in years? Yes. Coming back is the hard part and you have already done it by reading this.

Nothing you say or show us in this chair will surprise us. Our job is to help, not to mark you out of ten.

Meet Dr Ali Al-Hakim

There is a moment before every first appointment where you wonder who will be on the other side of the chair. So let us introduce him properly.

Dr Ali Al-Hakim is a general dentist here at Claremorris Dental Centre. His day covers the full range of general dentistry, from check-ups and fillings to root canal treatment, extractions and helping people who have not sat in a dental chair for years feel at ease again.

What patients notice first is the pace. Dr Ali explains what he is looking at, what the options are and what he would do if it were his own tooth, before anything happens. Nobody is rushed and nobody is talked down to.

Every weekend across Mayo, thousands of front teeth run out onto a GAA pitch. Some of them are wearing €10 of protection. Some are wearing none at all. 🏐

Here's what every GAA household should know: gumshields have been compulsory in Gaelic football for all ages and grades since 2014 and for good reason. A stray elbow or a clash going for the same ball is all it takes, and a knocked-out adult tooth is an injury you manage for life, not just for a season.

But not all gumshields do the same job:

🦷 Boil-and-bite shop-bought ones are better than nothing but they're often loose, bulky, and end up chewed at the back of the gear bag

🗣️ A poor fit means players take them out to talk and 'forget' to put them back in which is when injuries happen

So many mums-to-be quietly skip the dentist for nine whole months, thinking it's the careful thing to do. It's actually the opposite. 🤰

First tooth or first birthday whichever comes first. Most parents are genuinely surprised the answer is that early. 🍼🦷

So why so soon, when there are barely any teeth to look at? Because that first visit isn't really about teeth at all:

🏠 It builds the habit early, so the dentist becomes a normal part of life not a scary event

😊 Your child gets familiar with the sights, sounds and faces long before anything needs doing

🔍 We can spot small issues before they become big ones

👪 And honestly? A lot of the first visit is coaching you feeding, dummies, brushing tiny teeth, fluoride questions

What actually happens: usually just a relaxed 'knee-to-knee' look your little one sits on your lap facing you, leans back onto the dentist's knees for a quick peek, and that's often it. A look and a chat. No drama.

One tip that makes a real difference watch your words at home. Skip 'it won't hurt', 'no needles' and even 'be brave' (they all plant the idea something scary is coming). Try 'the dentist is going to count your teeth' instead. ✨

A Day in the Life
Behind Our Front Door

The kettle goes on at 8am sharp and that's the first of about a hundred small routines you never see. ☕

Before the first patient walks through the door of Claremorris Dental Centre, the whole team gathers for a morning huddle. We walk through the day's diary together who's coming in, who's nervous, who's back after a long gap and might need a gentler pace. The day is planned around people, not just slots.

Then there's the routine nobody sees: between every single patient, surfaces are wiped down, instruments go through a full sterilisation cycle, and the room is reset from scratch. It's not glamorous, but it's the quiet promise behind every appointment.

And in between? The small human moments that make this place what it is a nervous patient's shoulders finally dropping, a toddler high-fiving the whole team on the way out, someone seeing their new smile for the first time.

The last steriliser cycle hums away as the lights go off. Tomorrow, the kettle starts it all again.
