If a tooth breaks, the patient should consult a dentist, who will recommend the most appropriate restoration method.

1. To repair small cracks and chips, it may be enough to install a filling.

2. Root canal treatment is necessary if the crack in the tooth reaches the pulp.

If the patient experiences increased sensitivity, swelling, or toothache, a root canal may be necessary.

Left untreated, the infection can spread and lead to other serious health problems.

3. A dental crown is a common way to restore a broken tooth. Crowns can be made of various materials, including metal, ceramic, and porcelain.
Preparing the site for the crown and fabricating the structure in a dental laboratory takes a little time, but within two to three weeks, the patient can smile without embarrassment.

4. If the broken tooth cannot be repaired, it is removed and a dental implant is placed in its place.

HOW ARE TEETH DIFFERENT FROM BONES?
Anatomically, teeth and bones have different structures.

Firstly, teeth don't have bone marrow, which produces blood cells.
And there is bone marrow in the bones.

Secondly, teeth are much stronger than bones.
The enamel covering the tooth is the hardest material in the human body.
The mineral content of enamel reaches 97%.
Adult bone, on the other hand, consists of only 60-70% calcium and phosphorus.

Thirdly, teeth are located in the jawbone, but they are not part of this bone and are not firmly attached to it.
Teeth are held in place by elastic threads called ligaments.
These ligaments cushion the chewing forces on the jaw.
Because the tooth is suspended by these ligaments, it has some mobility in its socket.
You can feel this by gently wiggling it with two fingers.
Don't worry, the connection with the threads is very strong.

It's important to note that a dental implant is not attached to ligaments like a natural tooth.
Lost ligaments cannot be restored.
An implant placed in place of a natural tooth fuses with the bone (osseointegration) and no longer moves like a natural tooth.

A long-term study shows that DENTAL IMPLANTS REMAIN PERFECT EVEN 40 YEARS AFTER THEIR PLACEMENT.

This study, conducted by the University of Gothenburg, analyzed a group of patients with single dental implants placed between 1982 and 1985.

The results showed that after almost 40 years, these implants remain functional and stable, with only minimal bone loss.

The low bone loss recorded over many years confirms that osseointegration with implants is reliable in the long term.

This is largely due to careful planning and regular follow-up, emphasizing the importance of ongoing monitoring for the long-term success of implantation.

The study also found that while dental implants themselves are durable, the crowns placed on them are less durable.
After 40 years, only about 60% of the original crowns remained: many were replaced for aesthetic reasons.

Dr. Jan Kovar, an orthodontist and co-author of the study, believes that the development of new materials for dental crowns will make implant treatment even more durable in the future.

WHAT IS THE DANGER OF PERIODONTITIS?

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissues that surround the tooth and hold it in place.

If periodontitis is left untreated, the disease will progress.
The dental bone will be destroyed, requiring surgical intervention.

If periodontitis is mild, for example, if the inflammation has only affected the gum line, a professional teeth cleaning will help.

The cleaning includes ultrasonic scaling, polishing, and smoothing the protruding edges of crowns
and fillings.

In more complex cases, a deep cleaning is performed.
Tartar and inflamed tissue accumulated in the gum pockets are removed.

Treatment is performed under local anesthesia.
The recovery period after such a deep cleansing is 2-3 months.

It's important to note that periodontitis is a chronic disease. It cannot be completely cured, but it can
be made asymptomatic.
To prevent recurrence of inflammation (relapse), it is necessary to have regular professional dental
cleanings to remove tartar.

Please note that periodontitis is a slow-growing inflammatory disease that not only leads to tooth loosening and loss but also increases the risk of developing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

WHY DO HUMANS NEED WISDOM TEETH?

Although modern dentistry will fight to the bitter end for a patient's teeth, THERE ARE
SITUATIONS WHEN TEETH MUST BE EXTRACTED:

1. A cracked or fractured tooth root (sometimes the tooth may hurt when biting).
There will be acrack on the x-ray.
Such a tooth cannot be repaired or saved, as bacteria will pe*****te the crack, and inflammation will develop in the surrounding tissue.

2. Root caries, which has destroyed the tooth below the gum line. Even if a filling is attempted on the root, fluid from the subgingival space will gradually erode the cement, and the restoration will not last long.

3. Thin root walls. This occurs during repeated root canal retreatment. During these procedures, the dentist widens the root canals each time to remove the old filling material and the layer of infected tissue.
When less than 1/3 of the root volume remains, retreatment is pointless, as it will soon crack
under normal chewing pressure.

4. Root perforation: an unwanted hole in the tooth wall that forms as a result of poor root canal treatment.
Small, fresh holes can still be sealed with special cement. With large and old perforations, the patient is referred for tooth extraction.

5. Extensive root resorption: the root shortens, increasing the risk of tooth fracture under chewing pressure.

6. Problematic root canals that cannot be accessed and treated.

7. Pathological tooth mobility due to periodontitis. Periodontitis destroys the tooth's ligaments.
If the tooth is no longer held in its socket, there's no point in trying to save it.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A TOOTH UNDER A CROWN WHEN CARIES APPEARS ON IT?
First, caries causes the gradual destruction of the enamel and dentin of the tooth under the crown.
This occurs due to the activity of bacteria, which produce acids as they digest carbohydrates from food debris.
And these acids destroy the minerals in the tooth tissue.

Secondly, if the tooth under the crown is “alive” (the nerve has not been removed), caries can reach the pulp – the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels.

Cavities lead to inflammation of the pulp (pulpitis), which is accompanied by pain, especially when chewing or when exposed to hot and cold foods.

Third, if the inflammation of the pulp is left untreated, the infection can spread to the root canals and surrounding tissues.
Periodontitis (inflammation of the tissue around the root) develops, and purulent lesions (abscesses) appear.

Unfortunately, if decay has severely damaged the dental tissue beneath a crown, restoring the tooth becomes difficult or impossible.
The tooth will need to be extracted.
