Today we are celebrating with our nurse Jackie, who is marking an amazing 10 years at Museum Square! 🥳

Jackie works alongside our dentist Luke, but you can also find her popping up in various places around the practice.

Today is Makaton International Awareness Day, over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech.

In addition to children and adults with communication and learning difficulties, and the community around them (including teachers, health professionals, friends, family, and public service bodies), Makaton is increasingly used by the general public to aid communication.

Makaton has been shown to be useful for all sorts of people including those who struggle with understanding concepts, those who have poor literacy skills, including grammatical knowledge, and those with English as an Additional Language. By using Makaton, children and adults can take a more active part in life, because communication and language are the key to everything we do and learn.

At the practice we are able to use Makaton to help with communication.

It's International Dog Day! 🐶
And just like with our beloved cats we showed off the other week, a lot of us here at the practice also have lots of gorgeous dogs too, including some recent additions.
So here we are, showing them off.

We also have some pup-tastic facts for you:

1) Puppies have 28 teeth and adult dogs have 42 teeth.

2) Dogs help to relieve stress - Studies show that when you stroke a dog your body releases a hormone that helps us to relax and relieves stress, which also lowers our blood pressure.

3) They have a fantastic sense of smell - According to vet charity PDSA, the area of cells in the brain that detect different smells is around 40 times larger in dogs than it is in humans. This means dogs can smell much more than we can and explains why they are often used as sniffer dogs in the police force. They can also sniff out cancer, diabetes and early signs of a seizure!

4) They can learn around 100 words - Studies have found dogs can learn around 100 words and gestures, with many owners teaching their dogs tricks or commands.

5) Each dogs nose has a unique print - A dogs nose may look pretty generic but it's actually as unique a human finger print, the combination of ridges and creases is so distinct it can actually be used to identify them.

6) Dogs can see in colour - They only have 2 cones in their eyes to detect colour, whereas humans have three. This means dogs see colours on a blue and yellow scale but can't distinguish between red and green. On the other hand, dogs have better night vision than humans.

The Tooth Fairy, a popular figure in Western folklore, is believed to exchange a child's lost baby tooth for a small gift, typically money. While the modern tooth fairy is a relatively recent invention, there are historical precedents for the special significance of children's teeth and rituals surrounding their disposal.

Early Beliefs:
In various cultures, losing a baby tooth was seen as a significant event. Some cultures buried teeth to ward off bad luck or protect against witches who might use the teeth for magic. Others threw teeth onto roofs or gave them to animals to encourage strong adult teeth.

The Viking Connection:
Some theories suggest the tooth fairy's origins are linked to the Vikings, who used children's teeth in jewelry and believed they held magical power, particularly for warriors. They might have paid a "tooth fee" for the teeth.

Europe:
In many European countries, the tooth fairy is often depicted as a mouse, possibly stemming from a French story about a mouse-fairy who helped a queen.

The 1908 Chicago Tribune Article:
Lillian Brown's "Household Hints" column in the Chicago Daily Tribune is credited with the first written mention of the tooth fairy. It suggested leaving a small gift (like a 5-cent coin) under a child's pillow in exchange for their lost tooth, to encourage them to allow loose teeth to be pulled.
