A lovely result for this patient who came to see us with an impacted upper canine and a retained baby tooth.
An impacted canine is a tooth that hasn’t erupted into the correct position and remains trapped high in the jawbone. In this case, X-rays showed the adult canine sitting very high and away from the other teeth, with signs suggesting possible ankylosis (where the tooth can become fused to the bone).
After a consultation with Dr Gardner, we carried out detailed digital scans and a series of virtual treatment simulations. One of the great things about modern orthodontics is being able to digitally plan different treatment options and actually show patients what their smile could look like before treatment even begins.
There are a number of ways to manage cases like this, and together we chose the most conservative option. Rather than removing healthy teeth, the plan was to gently align the teeth with Invisalign while retaining the upper baby canine, which remained strong and healthy.
At the end of treatment, whitening was completed and composite bonding was carefully added to reshape the baby tooth so it blends naturally with the adult teeth.
