We are seeing more and more of my patients complain about bad breath since they have been wearing their masks π·
β
Why is this happening?
β
πΉUnfortunately patients have not been able to access dental care during the pandemic with ease, resulting in plaque build up and undiagnosed decay which can result in bad breath
β
πΉ Wearing a mask encourages mouth breathing, meaning you breath more through your mouth than your nose. This leads to dry mouth: this decrease in salivary flow increases likelihood of halitosis (bad breath)
β
πΉ Wearing a mask all day also means you are less likely to drink water π§ Increased water intake, increases salivary rate, so not drinking as much can again reduce saliva and cause bad breath over time
β
Although masks may be around for the long haul, bad breath doesnβt have to be ππΌ
