No facebow - no imps - no adjustments

Another low profile, fully balanced splint! This patient had worn her previous splint every night for over 10 years, so after losing it she was understandably nervous about adapting to a new one. But the moment this one went in, she immediately loved the comfort and reduced overlap.

Same protocol as always using a digital scan, leaf gauge bite registration recorded at the exact OVD of the splint, and careful design cues to achieve a balanced, comfortable fit with zero adjustment. If you missed my protocol from the previous posts, comment ‘SPLINT’ below and I can still send it to you.

Thank you low lip line 🫡

This patient had defective composite fillings on the central incisors which we he had deliberated over replacing for a while. Although he also had multiple older implant restorations with some soft tissue deficiencies, these remained stable and maintainable and were not a concern to him. The challenge was replacing the central composites with fully layered direct composite while blending naturally against the surrounding porcelain and existing restorations. Using subtle opal, ochre characterisation, incisal whites and shaping, we achieved a harmonious result that refreshed the smile while still conforming naturally to the existing smile. Thank god for the low lip line making my efforts look better than they are 🤣

Super smooth margins - Minimal tissue trauma

My secret? I finish my prep margins using a flat ended white stone customised into a round ended cylinder in a speed increasing handpiece with plenty of water. After stopping just short of the gingiva with diamonds, the white stone gently teases the margin into the sulcus, smoothing the prep and refining the finish without traumatising tissues like a traditional diamond can.

Bleach white needs sleek shapes 😎✌🏼

This case started with a request for 10 composite veneers, maybe influenced by the high-volume smiles we’re all seeing online. After discussing long-term maintenance, facial balance, and what actually ages well, we shifted the plan to a more conservative and approach.

We limited treatment to the front six teeth, with only subtle additions on the canines to balance the proportions and maximise guidance. Careful use of white tints and slight opalescence at the incisal edges helped maintain a natural transition without being overpowering.

The key here was restraint. By avoiding unnecessary volume, the restorations sit comfortably within the patient’s face. They look like his teeth, just refined. No bulky emergence, no overfilled embrasures, no artificial lift to the lip. Just clean, controlled, and maintainable dentistry.

So what are your thoughts? Do you prefer composite veneers on more teeth with a slightly heavier emergence and greater volume? Or do you prefer to limit the number of teeth and go for a more sleek, subtle look?

Just in case you missed it last time! This is my go-to setup for every restorative procedure. Everything I need, all in one place. Clear matrices, sectional systems, wedges, polishing discs, rubber dam clamps, rings. No searching, no delays, no friction. Just a smooth, repeatable workflow that lets me focus purely on the craft. It has genuinely transformed how I work day to day. Faster setup, better organisation, more consistent outcomes.

Comment “LEAFVSLUCIA” for the match summary 🥊

The response to the recent splint and leaf gauge posts has been incredible, so thank you to everyone engaging, commenting, and downloading the resources. I’ve put a lot into creating these for your education and reference, and it’s great to see them being used.

Following on from this, the next step is another predictable way to capture CR using a Lucia jig. If you want a clear summary of leaf gauge vs Lucia jig, when to use each, and how they differ clinically, comment ‘LEAFVSLUCIA” below for your downloadable JPEG guide for your camera roll collection.

Personally, I use a leaf gauge day to day because my technique is very refined and controlled. With gentle, fluid tapping and a light closure, I can achieve consistent, repeatable records without needing to adjust splints or having unwanted mandibular shifting.

However, if you’re earlier in your journey, the Lucia jig offers a more structured and step-by-step approach that reduces both operator and patient variability. If this post performs well, I’ll also film a full protocol showing both chairside and lab-made Lucia jig techniques.

I hope you enjoy the content ✌🏼
