What if damaged teeth could grow back?

It sounds like science fiction, but scientists at the University of Nottingham have developed a new protein-based gel that could help regrow lost tooth enamel.

The gel creates a scaffold that encourages minerals from saliva to form new enamel-like material, potentially allowing damaged enamel to regenerate rather than simply being repaired.

And this could be just the beginning. If scientists can learn how to regenerate enamel, could the next step be finding ways to regenerate more of the tooth itself?
