Nearly 10 years building White Smiles, and after all that, I’m still learning. Here’s some of the lessons I value the most:
The tiny things are the most important.
Remembering someone’s name. Knowing they’re nervous before they have to tell you. How you make them feel. The experience is built in hundreds of moments nobody puts on a treatment plan.
The team has to care.
You can have the nicest practice and the best clinicians in the world, but if the people around you don’t genuinely care about the patient experience, none of it works.
Skills are developed. Values are much harder to teach. I’ve learned to pay very close attention to how someone makes other people feel.
Remembering my why.
Knowing why I was building White Smiles has mattered. I never wanted simply to own a dental practice. I wanted to create the kind of place I believed dentistry could be.
What matters to patients.
Patients don’t see the meetings, systems, training or hours that went into getting something right. They just know whether they felt listened to, looked after and safe.
Listen. Really listen.
Some of the biggest changes we’ve made have come from paying attention to what patients tell us and sometimes what they don’t.
You don’t have to choose between exceptional dentistry and exceptional care.
For me, one should never exist without the other.
A strong vision holds you up.
Building White Smiles has tested me, stretched me, humbled me and made me far more certain about the things I’m not prepared to compromise on.
And nearly ten years later, I can look around White Smiles and see pieces of that original idea everywhere.
But perhaps the biggest lesson?
None of this matters unless it makes things better for the patient.
A better experience.
Better care.
A team that genuinely gives a damn.
And somewhere you can walk into feeling nervous, self-conscious or unsure and leave feeling a little more like yourself.
That’s what I was trying to build all along. 🤍
