🀍Product Review🀍

Our friends at brush-baby have kindly gifted us their new SoftBrush to try, so Ted and I can share our thoughts.

Ted is 11 months old and currently has 4 teeth, with two more due to make an appearance soon. We never normally have an issue with brushing Ted’s teeth, but recently his gums have been so sore that he won’t let us brush with his usual toothbrush.

When we received the SoftBrush, I thought it looked perfect for teething kiddies who might be suffering with tender gums. We have been using the SoftBrush twice a day for a week and here’s what we think:

🀍 Small, compact head - ideal for accessing all the nooks and crannies in little mouths
🀍 6000 ultra soft bristles - soft and gentle on sore gums but dense enough to remove harmful plaque buildup
🀍 The bristles are coated in nano-silver - Silver has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which helps to control the growth of plaque bacteria.
🀍 The handle is the perfect size for little hands. It is also long and non-slip which makes it easy for grown-ups to manoeuvre.
🀍 The brushes come in a pack of two - Ted can keep his hands occupied with one whilst I brush with the other. Also good for modelling technique (grownups can demonstrate how to brush so kiddies can copy)

Being a Dental Therapist, I am extremely picky with what toothbrushes I am happy for Ted to use; the Brush-baby SoftBrush gets a thumbs up from me! Brushing our little ones’ teeth can sometimes be a difficult task, so anything that makes it easier for grownups and more comfortable for children is a big plus.

Thank you again Brush-Baby for gifting us your new brush!

🀍 Ready for action 🀍

For my patients, only the best will do. That is why I choose EMS Plus Powder with Erythritol for my Airflow treatments.

Here’s why:
🀍 It destroys harmful bacterial biofilm to prevent gum disease and tooth decay
🀍 Removes young calculus and stains
🀍 The powder is finely grained and less abrasive than others on the market
🀍 Erythritol helps to stop the regrowth of bacteria
🀍 Can be used on natural teeth, fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, gums, tongues, braces - pretty much everywhere!
🀍 Sweet tasting and vegan friendly!

Have you tried it yet?

Following on from my previous post about children 0-3, here are my recommendations for children aged 3-6!

My recommendations for children 3-6:
- Brush twice a day with a pea size amount of toothpaste containing more than 1000ppm fluoride
- Use a toothbrush with a small head
- Brushing should be supervised by parents/carers
- Keep sugary foods to mealtimes only and drink water or milk throughout the day
- Spit out after brushing and do not rinse
- Use sugar-free medicines where possible
- Visit a Dentist regularly

Top tips!
- Disclosing tablets can be used to highlight areas that have been missed after brushing
- Encourage cleaning inbetween teeth that touch eachother - Floss Picks are a good place to start!
- Make toothbrushing fun and let your little one look in the mirror whilst brushing

How smart is my new toothbrush?! Thank you so much Oral B (and my amazing rep) for sending me the Oral B iO electric toothbrush to try out. It looks and feels so posh - it’s like having the latest iPhone!

What I love about this brush:
- You can change the colour of the ring light to make it personal to you (obviously I chose pink πŸ’—)
- The head oscillates AND vibrates for an even better clean
- The smart pressure sensor lights green when you’re using the correct pressure and red when you’re pressing too hard!
- Visual timer so you know exactly how long you’ve been brushing for (and a lovely smiley face when you’ve hit 2 minutes)
- Bluetooth feature that you can link up to an app on your smartphone to track how effective your toothbrushing technique is!

Have you tried the Oral B iO yet?

We all want to give our children the best possible start in life. Establishing a good oral hygiene routine for your little ones is important to prevent tooth decay and other problems down the road!

Baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth, so let’s look after them!

My recommendations for children 0-3:
- When teeth come through, brush twice a day with a smear of toothpaste containing no less than 1,000 ppm fluoride
- Brushing should be supervised by parents/carers
- Keep sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes only
- Sugar should not be added to food or drinks when weaning
- From 6 months of age, children should be introduced to drinking from a free-flow cup. From age 1, feeding from a bottle should be discouraged
- Use sugar-free medicines when possible

Top tips!
- Avoid fruity or sweet flavoured toothpaste as this can make it harder to transition to an adult toothpaste
- Try incorporating toothbrushing into your bedtime routine by brushing in the bath
- You can bring your little one for a dental checkup as soon as their first teeth come through to get them familiar with the clinical environment

β€œWhat toothpaste should I use?”

There are so many different types of toothpaste on the market, it can be quite daunting trying to pick one! Especially because there is no β€œone size fits all” with toothpaste!

1. Protection - I always advise a toothpaste that contains 1450ppm for adults. Fluoride helps to strengthen your teeth and make them more resistant to decay! Higher fluoride toothpastes are available on prescription from a dentist to those who are considered high risk.
2. Sensitivity - sensitive toothpastes do work! There are several on the market with different active ingredients so what might work for one person may not be as effective for somebody else, so shop around. Ask your dental practice for samples to try before you buy!
3. Whitening toothpastes - these toothpastes can be abrasive and may cause wear on your teeth, so beware!

Recommendations-
General - Oral B Pro Expert, Colgate Total
Sensitive - Colgate Instant Relief, Sensodyne
For Erosion - Regenerate
Fun flavours - Curaprox Be You (also SLS free)

Remember to spit, don’t rinse!

β€œDo you do teeth whitening?” is probably the question we as Dental Professionals get asked the most. Everybody wants a beautiful smile, and who can blame you! Your smile is the first thing that others notice, so let’s help you make an amazing first impression!

Synergy Dental Care and I have decided to put together a short video to explain how our at home Teeth Whitening kits work.

We advise the following essential steps prior to undergoing Teeth Whitening:
- A full Dental Health Check to ensure you have a healthy mouth and are a suitable candidate for whitening
- A visit to the Hygiene Therapist to remove surface stains with our EMS Airflow system

If teeth whitening is the treatment for you, our team will create custom made whitening trays to fit your mouth perfectly. The teeth whitening gel is then added to the trays and are worn either during the day or throughout the night.
At Synergy Dental Care, we have a variety of WhiteWash Professional whitening gels in different strengths – your dentist can advise which type is most suitable for you.

Hydrogen Peroxide 6%
- Fast acting; worn for 90 minutes during the day
- Works well on heavily stained teeth
- Contains specially selected ingredients, such as potassium nitrate to reduce sensitivity, remineralising calcium, fluoride and soothing aloe vera
- High water content so it does not dehydrate your teeth during whitening

Carbamide Peroxide 10% or 16%
- This gel has slow release ingredients so can be worn for longer periods, usually overnight
- Contains desensitising potassium nitrate and fluoride
- High water content to prevent tooth dehydration

It is important to maintain good oral health whilst undergoing teeth whitening treatment.
- Brush twice a day for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste (some patients may benefit from a sensitive toothpaste during whitening)
- Clean between your teeth daily
- Use mouthwash at a separate time to brushing
- Visit a Dental Professional regularly
