🎄 Day 24 of our Oral Health Advent Calendar! 🎄

Many people think bleeding gums—especially while brushing or flossing—are harmless. They are not. Bleeding gums are usually a warning sign that something is wrong.

The most common cause is gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease.
What happens:
* Plaque (a sticky layer of bacteria) builds up along the gumline
* Bacteria release toxins that irritate and inflame the gums
* Inflamed gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily
Bleeding often occurs during brushing or flossing because the gums are already inflamed—not because you’re brushing “too well.”

🎄 Day 23 of our Oral Health Advent Calendar! 🎄

Smoking and excessive alcohol use increase the risk of oral health problems. Smoking can cause gum disease, tooth staining, bad breath, delayed healing, and oral cancer. Alcohol dries the mouth, weakens tooth enamel, increases cavities, irritates gums, and also raises the risk of oral cancer. When smoking and alcohol are used together, the risk of oral cancer becomes much higher. Limiting alcohol, avoiding smoking, and maintaining good oral hygiene help protect oral health.

UK support helplines:
* Smoking:
NHS Smokefree Helpline – 0300 123 1044
Free advice and support to help quit smoking across the UK.
* Alcohol:
Drinkline – 0300 123 1110
Free, confidential support for anyone worried about drinking.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) – 0800 917 7650

All services are confidential and free, and your GP can also help with local support.

🎄 Day 20 of our Oral Health Advent Calendar! 🎄

Sugar alone doesn’t cause cavities; bacteria convert sugars and other carbohydrates into acids that damage enamel. Cavity risk depends on diet frequency, bacteria, saliva, and oral hygiene.

🎄 Day 19 of our Oral Health Advent Calendar! 🎄

Acidic foods and drinks temporarily soften tooth enamel. Brushing too soon can wear it away.
Wait 30–60 minutes before brushing so saliva can neutralize acid and harden enamel again.
If needed, rinse with water, chew sugar-free gum, or have dairy instead of brushing right away.
Brushing before acidic foods is safer than brushing after.

Celebrating 40 Years of Dentistry: A Milestone for Clinical Director Marek

This year marks an incredible milestone for our Clinical Director, Marek, as he celebrates 40 years since qualifying from Birmingham University on 19th December 1986. Four decades of dedicated patient care, continuous learning, and a genuine passion for dentistry is a truly special achievement, and we are proud to celebrate it with him.
Throughout his career, Marek has cared for the Solihull community, building long-standing relationships with patients and supporting generations of families in maintaining healthy, confident smiles. His commitment to clinical excellence has never wavered, and even after 40 years he continues to attend courses every year to stay at the forefront of modern dentistry. His enthusiasm for what he does remains as strong as ever.

A Partnership That Stands the Test of Time
One of the most remarkable parts of Marek’s journey is his long-standing partnership with our Practice Manager, Sara. They first began working together in 1986, sharing a vision built on dedication and patient-centred care. This partnership led to the opening of Blossomfield Dental Care in 2007, where they proudly continue to lead the team together, shaping the friendly, welcoming practice patients know today.

A Passion for Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry
While Marek enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, he has a particular passion for advanced cosmetic and restorative treatments, including Implants, Invisalign, Composite Bonding, and Restorative Dentistry. His artistic eye and clinical skill allow him to enhance smiles while achieving natural balance and facial harmony.

Life Beyond the Dental Chair
Outside the clinic, Marek and Sara enjoy life on their small farm, home to goats, Highland Cows, Donkeys, Emus, Alpacas, and eight German Shepherds. He also loves hiking in Northumberland and Scotland, enjoying the peace and beauty of the outdoors.

A Huge Congratulations
From all of us at Blossomfield Dental Care, congratulations to Marek on 40 outstanding years in dentistry. Here’s to many more years of making patients smile.

🎄 Day 18 of our Oral Health Advent Calendar! 🎄

Rinsing your mouth with water after consuming foods or beverages that would stain a white shirt can help reduce tooth staining. This practice helps dilute and wash away acids and pigmented compounds, while giving saliva time to naturally neutralize the oral environment and protect tooth enamel.
