The BBC has confirmed what dentists across the UK have known for years.

Nearly 600 practices have handed back their NHS contracts in the last decade. Not because dentists want to abandon their patients. Because the government has made it financially impossible to treat them.

NHS dental work runs at a loss. The contract hasn’t been properly funded in decades. Dentists who try to make it work are essentially subsidising the government’s failure to invest in NHS dentistry, and eventually they can’t do it anymore.

The result? Dentists, dental practices and patients are being pushed into private dentistry whether they want to be or not. The government has quietly privatised dentistry by starving it of funding, and then left dentists, dental practices and patients to deal with the consequences.

We know this because we lived it. When we took over our Sandbach practice we spent months trying to recruit NHS dentists. The contract made it impossible. That decision was made for us, not by us.

So we did the only thing we could. We went private, but we made our prices as fair and transparent as possible. Because if dentists and patients are being forced into private dentistry by a government that won’t fund the alternative, the least we can do is make sure patients aren’t being overcharged for it.

Free NHS treatment remains available for all children under 18 at both our Liverpool and Sandbach practices. 🦷

In March 2026 the government launched an investigation into private dental pricing, specifically whether it’s fair and transparent for patients.

We launched Hampton Dental Care because we already knew it wasn’t.

Fixed prices. Published upfront. Lower than other practices. Not because a regulator told us to. Because we think that’s how it should always be.

The rest of the industry is being investigated. We’re just getting on with it. 🦷

The government’s Competition and Markets Authority recently launched a review into private dentistry, specifically looking at whether pricing is fair and transparent for patients.

We started Hampton Dental Care because we already knew the answer to that question.

FYI if you book your child’s free NHS check-up but don’t bring them, we can’t actually look in their mouth. We’ve tried looking at the appointment slot instead. Doesn’t work. 🦷😄
