Did you know that some dental problems can develop without causing pain in their early stages.
Tooth decay, for example, begins in the outer enamel of the tooth. Because enamel doesn’t contain nerves, a cavity can develop without you feeling it. Sensitivity or pain may only appear as decay progresses deeper into the tooth towards the dentine and pulp.
Gum disease can be quiet too. Early signs might be bleeding when brushing, redness or swelling rather than pain. Left untreated, inflammation can progress and begin to affect the tissues and bone that support the teeth.
There are other things we look for during a dental examination too, including cracks, changes in existing fillings or restorations, tooth wear and changes to the soft tissues in your mouth.
That’s why a dental check-up isn’t simply about asking, “Does anything hurt?”
It’s an opportunity to examine your teeth, gums and mouth, and where appropriate, use dental x-rays to help identify problems that may not be visible during an examination alone.
Feeling fine is a good thing. But it doesn’t always tell us the whole story.
Regular examinations give us the opportunity to identify changes earlier and help you maintain a healthy smile for the long term. Prevention is, afterall, better than cure.
