More mentoring and more opportunities to learn from colleagues: that is part of the culture change CDO Dr Jason Wong wants to see in dentistry.

Speaking at the Dentistry Show in London, he encouraged dental professionals to observe colleagues’ work and share learning through peer review, clinical audit and appraisals.

Could GP-style accreditation be on the horizon for dentists?

CDO Dr Jason Wong says the funding of NHS dental appraisals is the ‘first step’. Appraisals remain voluntary, but he hopes the current approach will start a wider conversation.

The April contract changes introduced £213 in appraisal funding for eligible dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists.

England’s chief dental officer has acknowledged that calling the new NHS care pathways “complex” gave the profession the wrong impression.

Speaking at the Dentistry Show in London, Dr Jason Wong said the pathways involve a large volume of work rather than complicated treatment, with prevention and stabilisation central to the approach.

But dental leaders told GDPUK that their concerns extend beyond terminology: complex administration, uncertainty and the financial risks borne by practices remain key issues.

NHS England were wrong to label the new clinical pathways included in the current contract as ‘complex’, chief dental officer Dr Jason Wong said today.
