🦷 The Mead Weekly Insight by Principal Dentist Laura Rudge

Modern dentistry isn’t always about doing more - sometimes, it’s about preserving more.

I’m fascinated by new approaches to treating early tooth decay without traditional drilling and fillings, where appropriate.

For me, dentistry is about preserving natural teeth, preventing problems wherever possible, and intervening only when necessary. Of course, fillings still have their place, but sometimes the best treatment is the most conservative one. 💙

🦷 We’re looking for an associate dentist to join The Mead! 🦷

We’re looking for someone who would genuinely enjoy becoming part of The Mead and, hopefully, building something with us over time.

We’re an independent, family-run private practice in Plymouth with a long-standing team and many patients we’ve had the pleasure of knowing for years. We care enormously about providing good dentistry, but also about creating a warm, relaxed practice where our patients feel known and properly looked after - and where our team enjoys coming to work.

Our new Associate Dentist will initially join us for two days a week, with the opportunity for the role to develop over time.

You might already be an experienced private dentist, or perhaps you’re looking for a supportive practice in which to develop the next stage of your career. For us, finding the right person is far more important than finding someone who arrives ticking every possible box.

We’d love to meet someone who is enthusiastic, takes pride in doing things well, enjoys building genuine relationships with patients and wants to continue learning. Above all, we’re looking for someone who shares our belief in thoughtful, ethical and patient-centred dentistry.

You’ll be joining an experienced and supportive team, working alongside our therapists and hygienists, with good clinical facilities, digital dentistry and the freedom to provide high-quality care in the way you believe is right for your patients.

We also don't take ourselves too seriously and enjoy a good laugh together - we think that matters too!

Your Mouth & Your Gut - More Connected Than You Think
Following on from last week’s insight about oral and overall health, I wanted to look a little more closely at the connection between the mouth and the gut.

We’re hearing more and more about the importance of the gut microbiome, but did you know that your mouth has its own complex microbiome too?

When this balance is disrupted by gum disease, poor oral hygiene or untreated dental problems, research suggests it may contribute to inflammation and potentially influence wider health.

We’re still learning about these connections, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: looking after your mouth is an important part of looking after the rest of you.

This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about prevention at The Mead - helping patients maintain their health, rather than simply treating problems when they arise.

I believe dentistry will increasingly be recognised as an important part of whole-body health, and it’s a conversation I’m passionate about having.

Your Mouth Is Part of Your Body - Not Separate From It
We often think about oral health and general health as two separate things, but we now understand much more about how closely they are connected.

Research continues to explore links between oral health, diabetes, cardiovascular health and inflammation - reinforcing the importance of looking after your mouth as part of your overall wellbeing.

This is one of the reasons I place such a strong emphasis on prevention at The Mead.

A dental examination isn’t simply about finding a cavity. It’s about spotting changes early, monitoring your health, understanding risks and, wherever possible, preventing problems before they become more significant.

For me, some of the most valuable dentistry is helping patients avoid needing treatment in the first place.

AI is becoming an increasingly useful part of dentistry, from analysing X-rays to supporting treatment planning and diagnosis.

I’m genuinely excited by what technology can bring to patient care, but I don’t believe it can replace the human side of dentistry.

Building trust, understanding anxiety and making patients feel genuinely cared for will always need a human touch. 💜
