🦷✨️Functional Appliances 🦷✨️

Functional appliances are used to correct the bite rather than the straightness of the teeth. Most patients describe this as a big overbite (though the correct term is overjet!) or their teeth ‘sticking out.’
We sometimes use a Twin Block appliance to reduce the overjet before fitting fixed appliances to straighten the teeth. These are removable orthodontic appliances that are worn full time and work by posturing the lower jaw forward with ‘blocks’ on either side and using the facial muscles and growth patterns to improve jaw alignment and profile.

Pros:
• Fantastic results if worn well
• Removable so easier to maintain good oral hygiene
• Less noticeable as no brackets
Cons:
• Removable so if not worn well, very limited results
• A more difficult appliance to wear than fixed braces
• Can only be used in growing patients

Did you know that we now offer Invisalign appliances that can achieve the same results as a Twin Block? 🤔🧐

These are Invisalign aligners that come with ‘wings’ on the side to posture the lower jaw forward in the same way as a Twin Block!
They are even less noticeable than a Twin Block appliance as there are no wires and they can also align the front teeth in the same way as traditional Invisalign aligners at the same time as improving the bite and reducing the overjet! They are also easier to wear than a Twin Block appliance as they do not cover the palate.

You can also jazz them up by adding funky stickers to them! 🤩
