What a difference the right KAFO can make.

This patient experienced a stroke in 2008 resulting in left-sided hemiplegia. For many years he relied on a conventional KAFO to manage knee hyperextension, valgus instability and foot drop. While it helped, he found it heavy, bulky and cumbersome to wear.

He came to us looking for a lighter and more comfortable solution.

Adding to the challenge, he experiences fluctuating lymphoedema which makes orthotic fitting more complex and increases the risk of skin irritation.

Following a comprehensive assessment we prescribed, manufactured and fitted an Allard Combo KAFO. The new device is approximately three times lighter than his previous KAFO, provides a significantly better fit and offers improved control of both the knee and ankle.

Most importantly he reported feeling more confident and comfortable. In his own words he had a "spring in his step" again and found walking noticeably easier.

We also paired the KAFO with Friendly Shoes. Their zip-opening design makes donning and doffing much easier, particularly given the limited function in his left hand.

Cases like this remind me that the right orthosis can do far more than improve gait mechanics. It can restore confidence, independence and quality of life.

🌟 A Fantastic Day of Learning at the Brain Injury Group Conference

What an inspiring day we had at the Brain Injury Group Conference last Thursday, a full programme of learning, innovation and powerful lived experience that truly reinforces why this work matters.

We heard from Ruth Purdie, who shared the impact of the road safety scheme designed to reduce road accidents and prevent life‑changing brain injuries.

Nicholas Cass spoke movingly about his journey as a brain injury survivor, joined by Ryan Price from Heads Up Therapies, highlighting how sport became a key part of his rehabilitation.

We also explored the future of healthcare with Geoffrey Simpson Scott and who discussed the growing role of AI.

The day was packed with sessions on genetics, brain tumours, charity support and so much more, each one adding depth to our understanding of how multidisciplinary teams can improve outcomes for people living with brain injuries.

A personal highlight was unexpectedly bumping into Bhaskar Basu an old friend and colleague from my Withington Hospital days. Such a lovely surprise and a reminder of how small and supportive this community truly is.

To finish the day on a high, the soirée with DJ Alex Sweeney had everyone up dancing, the perfect end to a brilliant event.

Feeling energised, grateful and proud to keep learning so we can continue supporting our patients with the very best care.

✨ Custom Neck Collar for Motor Neurone Disease ✨

Today we’re sharing a look at this bespoke cervical orthosis designed to support a patient living with motor neurone disease.

After a full clinical assessment, Tom completed a 3D scan to capture the patient’s exact anatomy. From this, we prescribed a 3D‑printed custom collar firm enough to prevent head drop, yet engineered with just the right amount of controlled flexibility to avoid excessive pressure on the fragile jawline.

The goal was simple but powerful:

• Restore a more natural head alignment
• Allow the patient to look straight ahead
• Improve comfort during daily activities
• Make eating and social interaction easier and less fatiguing

For individuals with progressive neuromuscular conditions, small changes in posture can make a profound difference to independence, confidence and quality of life.

This device is a perfect example of how thoughtful orthotic design can support that journey.

We are proud of the team and proud of the outcome. 💙

👟 Billy Footwear: Making Footwear More Accessible🎉

When it comes to pairing shoes with AFOs or orthotics, ease of donning can make all the difference and that’s where Billy Footwear really shines.

Their signature zip‑around design allows the shoe to open up completely, giving full access for the foot and device. This makes it easier for patients to don their AFOs, reduces strain and supports greater independence day to day.

At Woods Orthotics, we can advise on suitable footwear to help you reach your goals for comfort, stability and function. The right shoe can transform how your orthosis performs and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Accessible design. Thoughtful function. Better movement. 💙

🥅 Strength in Every Step Forward⚽

Images show the first stage for creating a custom helmet- the positive cast taken of the patient's head with markings drawn to aid the design process.

Tom recently completed a cranial cast for a remarkable young patient whose resilience continues to inspire our entire team. After sustaining a traumatic brain injury in a road accident, he has faced challenges that would stop many in their tracks, yet his determination to return to the sport he loves has never wavered.✨

This custom orthotic helmet is being crafted to give him the protection he needs to safely step back onto the football pitch, where his talent truly shines. His commitment to recovery, his passion for the game and his drive to keep moving forward embody the very spirit of perseverance. 🎉

At Woods Orthotics, we’re proud to support his journey and honoured to help him return to the activities that bring him strength, joy, and purpose. Here’s to courage, progress, and the power of possibility.⚽
