🦷 Who Is Entitled to an NHS Orthodontic Assessment? 🦷

At Devon Square Orthodontics, we know that understanding NHS orthodontic eligibility can be confusing. Here is a simple guide to help:

✅ Referral by a Dentist
To be considered for NHS orthodontic treatment, patients must first be referred by their general dentist.

✅ Age Requirement
Patients must be referred before their 18th birthday to be eligible for an NHS orthodontic assessment.

✅ Clinical Need for Treatment
Eligibility for NHS orthodontic treatment is determined using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This assessment helps identify patients with dental issues that may affect oral health, function, or long-term dental wellbeing, such as severe crowding, prominent teeth, impacted teeth, or bite problems.

✅ Good Oral Hygiene Is Essential
Patients being considered for NHS orthodontic treatment should demonstrate good to excellent oral hygiene. Keeping teeth and gums healthy before treatment begins is important, as orthodontic appliances can make cleaning more challenging.
