Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is the operational name of Aneurin Bevan University Local Health Board. The Health Board, one of 7 in NHS Wales, was established on the 1st October 2009 and covers the areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. The Health Board employs almost 14,000 staff, focusing on the needs of patients and citizens within our area and has a rel

ationship with a range of staff who deliver primary care services on our behalf including doctors, dentists, pharmacists and opticians and their staff. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is responsible for delivering and securing NHS health care services for more than 639,000 people living in the areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. Our services range from those delivered to you in your own home, in community settings close to where you live and in our community and general hospitals. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board also works with partner organisations and local people, with the aim of improving the health and well being of the people we serve.

💙 Today, on International Day of Charity, we're celebrating the incredible generosity of our patients, families, communities, staff, supporters and partners who help Aneurin Bevan Health Charity make a real difference across Gwent every day.

Thanks to charitable donations, the charity have been able to fund:

🙌 Patients arriving at our Emergency Department are being seen and assessed sooner thanks to our Senior Rapid Assessment and Treatment area.

For the past six months, the team in our emergency department have been helping ensure patients who need urgent care are identified quickly and directed to the most appropriate service.

By bringing senior doctors and specialist nurses together at the front door, assessments can take place sooner and treatment can begin earlier. Having a senior clinician involved from the outset means faster decision-making, helping patients get the best care, in the right place, at the right time.

Today we were delighted to welcome First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth MS and Cabinet Minister for Health and Care Mabon ap Gwynfor MS to Nevill Hall Hospital.

During the visit, the Ministers toured our operating theatres, Regional Ophthalmology Cataract Hub and endoscopy services, meeting staff and seeing first-hand how innovative ways of working are helping to reduce waiting times and improve access to care for patients across South East Wales, in line with our Gwent 35 ten-year strategy.

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth MS said: "I really enjoyed my visit to Nevill Hall Hospital today. It was particularly encouraging to speak with patients, who were extremely positive about the care and treatment they have received. I also had the opportunity to meet many members of staff across the hospital. There is a clear sense of pride in the work they do and a strong commitment to providing the very best care for the people of Wales.”

Meet Claire, our Lead Nurse for Women’s Health and manages the Gynaecology Ambulatory Unit at Nevill Hall Hospital. She has extensive experience in women’s health, having worked in gynaecology for many years and in colposcopy for over 20 years, including the last 12 years as a qualified colposcopist.

Colposcopy services are currently delivered at both Nevill Hall Hospital and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, and Claire plays a central role in ensuring these clinics run smoothly. Alongside her clinical work, she is responsible for overseeing clinic activity and allocating staff appropriately to meet service needs.

Claire is also the Lead Nurse for Cervical Cancer Screening Wales within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. In this role, she manages referrals and queries relating to cervical screening and ensures that any cases requiring follow-up are handled appropriately.

As well as her leadership responsibilities, Claire continues to run her own colposcopy clinics. She typically sees eight to nine patients per clinic and prides herself on spending as much time as needed with each individual. Many patients are referred following an abnormal smear test and can feel anxious or distressed when they attend. Claire talks them through what to expect, explains HPV and the cervical screening process, discusses vaccination history and reassurance around risk, and outlines the steps that can be taken to prevent cervical cancer developing.

Claire also finds great satisfaction in developing others and has trained a number of doctors and nurses to become colposcopists, something she finds particularly rewarding.

When asked why she loves her job, "I love working with people and being able to support, reassure and make a difference for patients at what can be an anxious time.”

From today, the RSV vaccine is being offered to more people, with the programme expanding to include some adults aged 65–74 with certain health conditions who are at higher risk from RSV. 📢

RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common virus that can cause serious illness, particularly in babies, older adults and people with certain health conditions.

The vaccine helps protect against severe illness caused by RSV. If you receive an invitation, make sure you attend your appointment. 📩

This Sepsis Awareness Month, we're encouraging everyone to learn the signs and symptoms of sepsis. Recognising sepsis early and getting medical help quickly can save lives.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires urgent treatment.

Symptoms include:

• Slurred speech or confusion
• Extreme shivering or muscle pain
• Passing no urine (in a day)
• Severe breathlessness
• It feels like you’re going to die
• Skin mottled or discoloured

Don't ignore the signs. Trust your instincts and seek urgent medical help if you think you or someone you know may have sepsis.
