What happens after a dental implant is placed?

Once the implant is positioned beneath the gum, the next step is something your body does naturally: healing.

Over the next three months or so, the implant gradually fuses with the surrounding bone, creating a strong and stable foundation. Once everything is solid and healed, the new tooth can be fitted on top.

From there, it’s designed to look, feel and function much like the tooth it replaces, so you can get back to eating, speaking and smiling naturally. And because of the stability an implant can provide, it can be a particularly strong option compared with teeth weakened by large fillings or crowns.

Dental implant treatment begins with careful assessment and planning.

At your initial consultation, Dr Nigel Suggett carries out a full risk assessment to determine your suitability for implant surgery and identify any factors that could affect the long-term success of treatment.

If you decide to proceed, a 3D CT scan is used to assess the surrounding anatomy and carefully plan the implant position, including the location of nerves, blood vessels and sinuses.

Implant surgery is typically carried out under local anaesthetic to fully numb the area. For patients who feel particularly anxious about treatment, intravenous sedation is also available.
