Clinicians changing lives through SmileStar 🌍

For nearly 20 years, SmileStar has grown into a leading humanitarian charity delivering life‑changing dental and medical care to communities with little or no access to healthcare.

Founded by Dr Mitesh Badiani, the UK‑based organisation has supported patients across Africa and India, while also offering long‑term dental care to medically discharged Royal Marines in the UK.

The charity has completed over 40 international outreach missions across 11 countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Jamaica, India and the Republic of Congo. Volunteer clinicians, dental nurses and wider healthcare professionals have provided essential treatment to tens of thousands of people living with chronic pain, often treating patients who have never seen a dental professional before.

A major milestone for SmileStar is the development of a permanent hospital in Gujarat, India, offering dental, medical and eye care services. Alongside urgent treatment, SmileStar places strong emphasis on education and sustainability, training local clinicians and healthcare workers so that care continues long after visiting teams return home.

Driven by compassion, clinical expertise and a commitment to global health equity, SmileStar continues to restore dignity, confidence and hope to communities worldwide.

We were delighted to attend the Smile Month 2026 Celebration Event last week - marking 50 years of the UK’s leading oral health campaign.

The afternoon brought together influential voices from across dentistry, public health, policy and industry to reflect on five decades of progress, while looking ahead to the future of global oral health.

Highlights from the day included:

• The launch of the 50/50 Oral Health Report, introduced by Dr Rachael England

• An insightful panel discussion hosted by Dr Ben Atkins, with contributions from Professor Iain Chapple, Preetee Hylton, Dr Fiona Sandom and Anna Smith

• A thought-provoking fireside conversation featuring Professor Georgios Tsakos, Dr Elizabeth Shick and Professor Manu Mathur, exploring the future of oral health on a global scale

A particularly special moment was recognising the retirement of Dr Nigel Carter OBE, celebrating his incredible leadership and lasting impact on oral health over the past five decades. His legacy continues to inspire the profession and shape its future.

A huge thank you to the Oral Health Foundation for hosting such an inspiring event and to Ingrid Perry, Oral Health Prevention Lead and Mandy Luyt, Social Media Manager, for attending and representing mydentist on the day.

They also signed up to support the Smile Month Prevention Pledge - and you can too. Visit https://bit.ly/4duE6RA to find out more and help champion prevention in oral health.

Supporting the next generation: how mydentist is working with Girls Out Loud

Teenage girls across the UK are facing unprecedented pressures, from social media and unrealistic beauty standards to rising mental health challenges and a lack of strong female role models. Girls Out Loud is working to change that, raising aspirations, building confidence and empowering girls aged 12–16 to thrive.

Through structured, professionally facilitated programmes including Stardom, Big Sister mentoring, Role Model Relay and Super 7 workshops, they are helping girls build confidence, improve self-esteem and make more positive life choices.

At mydentist, we’re proud to support this work and make a positive impact beyond the dental chair. Colleagues across mydentist, including those in HR, Finance and Resourcing, volunteer as Big Sisters, offering 12 months of support to girls who need a positive role model, funded by mydentist.

Our colleagues also take part in fundraising activities, from 10k runs to workplace events, helping raise money to support Girls Out Loud’s programmes. Female role models from mydentist also volunteer at Role Model Relay events, sharing insight into careers in dentistry, healthcare and support functions, helping to inspire the next generation.

This World Orthodontic Health Day, we’re shining a spotlight on the teams, colleagues and self-employed clinicians behind our patients’ confident smiles.⁣

From skilled orthodontists to orthodontic therapists and treatment coordinators, these are the people transforming lives – one appointment at a time.⁣

Take a moment to flick through our post and meet some of the inspirational individuals shaping our orthodontic division at mydentist. As Michelle, our Divisional Director, aptly commented: ⁣

“Orthodontics is a place where clinicians at all stages of their career can thrive.”⁣

Today, we’re recognising the people who bring that vision to life – those who champion one another, support their patients, and shape the future of orthodontics through respect, growth and teamwork at mydentist. ⁣

We’re proud to share that four colleagues from our Finance team have been shortlisted at this year’s Finance Awards North West - a programme that celebrates the very best finance talent across the region.

This year’s shortlist reflects exceptional achievement, leadership and impact, and we’re delighted to see mydentist so strongly represented across multiple categories.

Our 2026 finalists include:

We're proud to share that mydentist was shortlisted as a finalist for 'Growth Strategy of the Year' at the 2026 British Business Awards last Thursday.

There were hundreds of entries for this year's awards, so we were honoured to receive a shortlist and it was a fantastic evening celebrating businesses making a huge difference right across the country. Over the last 12 months, it's been amazing to see our support, field, practice and clinical teams come together to drive mydentist's growth forward, redefining what it means to practice and deliver dentistry in the UK.

In the past year, mydentist has gone from strength to strength – demonstrating extraordinary achievements bolstered by our new partnership with Bridgepoint, which continues to support us in expanding patient access, advancing digital dentistry and supporting both clinicians and practice teams on an unprecedented scale. All while delivering digital innovation across the UK’s largest dental footprint, investing significantly in our people and clinical workforce, expanding and enhancing our practices and supporting more patients to access high-quality dental care.

None of these achievements would be possible without our people, however. Nilesh Pandya, Chief Executive Officer, reflects: “When I look back at what we’ve been able to achieve over the last year, I’m enormously proud of all of our colleagues and clinicians and one thing is clear; it’s their expertise, passion and dedication that continues to propel mydentist forwards. For now, we remain focused on strengthening support for our clinicians and teams, optimising our customer journey and leveraging on digital transformation. By partnering with Bridgepoint, I think the future of mydentist holds more promise than ever before.”

A huge thank you to Richard Storah, Antonia Longrois, John Hudson, Natalie Farnworth, Mark Franklin, Sarah McKenna and Tom Dawson for joining the awards to mark the achievement of being shortlisted, and congratulations to all the winners and to everyone from the British Business Awards who helped make it such a fantastic evening.

Did you know? From 1st May 2013, patients have been able to book directly with hygienists and therapists, without needing to see a dentist first.

That’s why we mark this day as National Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist Day - celebrating the incredible care, skill and dedication of hygienists and therapists across the UK.

Sharon, a Dental Hygienist at mydentist Bridport, has spent 38 years in dentistry. In 2025, she was even recognised as mydentist’s Hygienist of the Year.

Stories like Sharon’s, reflect the passion and commitment seen across our practices every day. From prevention and patient education to essential treatments, our teams are at the heart of helping patients maintain their oral health.

To all our hygienists and therapists, thank you for the difference you make.
