Ever had your hygienist call out numbers while you're lying back, wondering what on earth they mean? Gina's here to decode them.

That's your BPE — Basic Periodontal Examination. We gently measure around your gums and score each section from 0 to 4.

A 0 means healthy and happy; higher numbers simply tell us where your gums need a little more attention before anything becomes a problem.

It's one of the most useful 30 seconds of your whole appointment — and now you'll actually know what we're on about.

Spit pink when you brush? Here's what your gums are trying to tell you.

Bleeding usually means plaque has built up along the gumline and irritated it and caused inflammation.

However, the good news: caught early, it's very treatable — and often reversible at home.

A few things that help:

1. Brush gently twice a day — don't scrub, and don't skip the bit that's bleeding (that area needs it most)
2. Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes
3. Stay hydrated and go easy on sugary snacks
4. Book a hygiene visit to clear the hardened plaque a brush can't reach

If it carries on for more than a week or two, come and see us — our team can may help to stop or slow down it's progression.
