We asked Sylvia how she ended up becoming a dentist.

It turns out it all started with a routine check-up. After finishing school with a love of science and no clear idea of what came next, a trip to the dentist of all places sparked something.

She got herself a job as a dental nurse in the next village, fell completely in love with it, applied to university โ€” and 26 years later, here she is! ๐Ÿ˜Š

We think it's safe to say dentistry found the right person. We're so glad it did!

Say hello to the wonderful Dr Sylvia Bentley! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ˜Š

Sylvia is our Associate Dentist at Thatch House and honestly, she's been part of the fabric of this community for years. She originally joined Long Buckby Dental Practice back in 2010 as principal dentist, so when Deep and Sheena took over in 2021 we were absolutely delighted she stayed on โ€” her patients wouldn't have had it any other way! ๐Ÿฆท

Qualifying from Guy's Hospital London in 2000, Sylvia brings a wealth of experience and a brilliant range of skills to the practice, including composite bonding and orthodontics with SureSmile. She's the kind of dentist who truly gets to know her patients and takes real pride in the results she achieves for them.

"Sugar free" and "no added sugar" โ€” they sound pretty similar, but when it comes to your teeth they're not quite the same thing!
Neither label means a drink is completely tooth-friendly. Acidity is just as much of a concern as sugar content when it comes to your enamel. ๐Ÿฆท
Our top tips:
โœ… Water is always the best choice for your teeth
โœ… If you do enjoy fizzy or fruity drinks, have them with a meal rather than sipping all day
โœ… Wait 30 minutes before brushing after an acidic drink
โœ… A straw can help reduce contact with your teeth

Do you wake up with a sore jaw, headaches, or teeth that feel sensitive? You might be grinding your teeth at night โ€” and you wouldn't even know it! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Teeth grinding (or bruxism) is really common, often stress-related, and left untreated it can cause some serious damage to your teeth over time.

If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth having a chat with us โ€” we can take a look and find the best way to help. Book via the link in: https://buff.ly/rS37Ec5

When did you last see our hygienist? ๐Ÿฆทโœจ A hygiene appointment is so much more than just a clean โ€” it's one of the most important things you can do for your long-term oral health. Our hygienist will remove built-up plaque and tartar that your toothbrush simply can't reach, check on the health of your gums, and give you personalised advice to keep everything in great shape between visits.
The result? Fresher breath, a brighter smile, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your mouth is healthy from the inside out. ๐Ÿ˜Š
Regular hygiene visits can also play a role in your wider health too โ€” gum disease has been linked to conditions including heart disease and diabetes, so it really is worth keeping on top of.
Whether you're already a regular or it's been a little while, we'd love to see you โ€” book via the link: https://thatchhousedental.co.uk

Brushing your teeth โ€” you've been doing it your whole life, but are you doing it right? ๐Ÿค” It's one of those things that's easy to rush or get into bad habits with. Here are our top tips to make sure you're getting the most out of those two minutes! ๐Ÿฆทโœจ
๐Ÿชฅ Use a soft-bristled brush โ€” harder isn't better, it can actually damage your enamel and irritate your gums
โฑ๏ธ Brush for a full two minutes โ€” twice a day, every day, no shortcuts!
โ†”๏ธ Small circular motions โ€” not aggressive back and forth scrubbing
๐Ÿ“ Angle your brush at 45ยฐ โ€” towards the gumline to clean where it matters most
๐ŸŒ™ Never skip your night brush โ€” brushing before bed is the most important one of the day
๐Ÿ”„ Change your brush every 3 months โ€” worn bristles just aren't doing the job properly
๐Ÿ’ง Spit, don't rinse โ€” leave the toothpaste on your teeth to let the fluoride do its thing!
Small tweaks to your routine can make a really big difference over time. And of course, regular hygiene appointments with our team help keep everything on track. ๐Ÿ˜Š
