Some light weekend humour. Love Eddie Izzard and this had me in stitches.Of course in reality our techniques are very gentle and I always make a point explaining in great detail what I am doing and what I am trying to achieve by it. Want to find out more about Osteopathy and how I might be able to help?

Mindfulness meditation
I recently came across a new app call headspace that I know quite a few of you are already using. ( https://www.headspace.com/)
I found it to be a great daily exercise that doesn't require a lot of commitment.
There are studies claiming that it can help with a variety of things such as stress, chronic pain, gastro intestinal problems and even sleep.
Why not give it a go? I noticed going about my day in a much calmer way😉

A great new website. This project started some years ago when Gp's asked each other for their recommendations of specialists.
It has now expanded tremendously and provides you with some excellent recommendations.
Great job Rasha Gadelrab Ioannou!!!!!

It is often difficult to picture what happens when one suffers a disc prolapse, and to get an understanding of which structures are involved and affected.
Imagine a disc like and onion. It is made of many fibrous outer rings that surround a gel like substance in the middle.
This short video gives you a great view demonstrating that its not a disc as such slipping out but rather the outer fibrous part of the disc staring to form fissures through which the center "gel" like substances of the disc squeezes through - prolapsing out.
Depending on where the prolapse bulge is it can then press onto a nerve root which might present either with sensory changes such as numbness or pins and needles- if the compression is mild- or In more severe cases one might experience weakness or loss of function of particular muscles altogether.
This is because of the structure of nerves which can be easiest pictured as a tube of many fibers- like an electricity cable. The outer fibers are responsible for sensation while the more central fiber control movement. Therefor if we have a mild compression it tends to affect only the outer sensory fibers while a severe compression reaches to the central part of the nerve.

While osteopathic treatment can not "slip" the disc back in, there is a lot that can be done for the surrounding areas and by doing so take some of the pressure around the disc area away and thereby aid the healing process.
So even though a patient might come in with a disc injury I could assess for example their upper back, hips, feet even the diaphragm and treat any restrictions I might find in any of those areas.
If you would like to find out more or would like to discuss how osteopathy could help you just give me a call.
