Do I need a root canal treatment?

Sensitivity to hot or cold foods, or experiencing toothache, doesn’t necessarily mean you need a root canal.

Equally, sometimes a tooth that needs root canal treatment may cause very little pain — which is why proper assessment is so important.

At Dental Rooms, our endodontist specialists assess the health of the tooth’s nerve using a combination of clinical tests and appropriate imaging, including X-rays and, where required, a CBCT scan.

The aim is to understand exactly what is happening, whether root canal treatment is necessary, and what the best treatment option is for you.

Does a root canal hurt?

It’s probably one of the first questions patients ask — and understandably so.

The good news? Root canal treatment itself should not be painful. Before treatment begins, your tooth is carefully numbed with local anaesthetic. Your endodontist then removes the infected or inflamed tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth and seals it to help protect it from further infection.

Every tooth and every case is different. The anatomy of the roots, the extent of the infection and the complexity of the case can all affect the treatment and aftercare.

That’s why an assessment with an endodontist — a specialist in root canal treatment — is so important. They can assess your tooth, explain each step, discuss what to expect afterwards and help you understand all your treatment options.

And remember, the aim of root canal treatment is simple: to save your natural tooth whenever possible.

If your tooth is already infected or inflamed, delaying treatment may mean continuing discomfort, swelling or further problems.
