Why might an expander be recommended?

Our Specialist Orthodontist, Dr Maï-Linh Tran, explains when a Rapid Maxillary Expander may be recommended for a growing child.

A Rapid Maxillary Expander, or RME, may be recommended when the upper jaw is too narrow, when there is a crossbite — where the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth — or when there is crowding and not enough space for the adult teeth to come through properly.

✨ An RME is a fixed appliance that gently widens the palate over several weeks through daily activation of an expansion screw.

Once the expansion is complete, the appliance usually stays in place for around 6 months to help stabilise the result.

💙 By creating more space in the upper jaw, an expander can support more balanced facial growth and give the developing adult teeth the room they need.

Every child is different, so an orthodontic assessment is important to determine whether an expander is appropriate and when treatment should begin.
