Day 22 Ramadan 2024

Fruits in Quran Health Benefits

Figs

The Quran has an entire chapter named after the Fig (Surah At-Tin chapter 95)
Figs contain:
Fibre: helps with maintaining healthy blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels
Magnesium: plays a key role in bone health and energy balance.
Figs are commonly consumed dried, and as with any dried fruit, it’s important to be careful with the sugar content. Lots of brands may add extra sugar to dried fruit, so reading the label to ensure you’re not getting the added sugar is really important.

Dates
They are mentioned more than 20 times in the Holy Quran Dates.
Dates contain: fibre, vitamins including B6 and C, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorous, and potassium.
They are high in natural sugars which provides a remarkable source of energy. Athletes frequently turn to dates as a nourishing and long-lasting energy enhancer, making them an ideal choice for fuelling the body during demanding physical activities.

Even though dates are sweet, they have a low glycaemic index (blood sugar ranking). This means that their natural sugars are released slowly into the bloodstream, helping regulate blood sugar levels and preventing rapid spikes.

Olives (we spoke about them in combination with figs already)

In Surah Al Mu’minun (chapter 23 verse: 20) the Quran tells us of fruits to be eaten, and speaks of:

“As well as olive trees which grow at Mount Sinai providing oil and a condiment to eat”

Olives have the essential fatty acids that are great for heart and brain function, and polyphenols that have antioxidant properties.
Olive oil and its benefits in your diet as a better fat option

Pomegranates

Surah Ar -Rahman (chapter 55 verse: 68)
Pomegranates are really high in Vitamin C, which is important for many functions in the body including collagen formation for maintaining muscle, bone, and skin, as well being a key player in iron absorption and more! Pomegranate juice has become very popular, however the best way to enjoy it is by eating the fruit itself! The juice actually lacks the vitamin C (and usually needs to be added back in) as well as fibre. By eating the pomegranate fruit itself, you could get almost half your daily needs of fibre and vitamin C!

Grapes

Surah Al Mu’minun (chapter 23 verse: 19-20)
Grapes are popular snacks and contain a high antioxidant content as well as flavonoids that have been shown to be beneficial in counteracting the oxidative damage that some studies have even linked to having cancer-fighting properties. Even as raisins they maintain their antioxidant levels!

Bananas

In Surah Al Waqi’ah (chapter 56 verse: 27-33)

The Quran makes general mention of fruit being eaten by those in paradise, and a specific mention of banana trees. Bananas are packed with potassium (essential for fluid balance and nerve function and helps keep muscles and bones working properly) and Vitamin B6 (needed for amino acid synthesis and therefore proper protein function in the body).

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are exempt from fasting, however, the reality is that many pregnant and breastfeeding women still decide to fast and this decision should be respected yet supported. This is a personal choice and so long as each woman can assess her capability and ensure she is not endangering her and her baby’s health. Pregnant women should continue to seek advice and care from their doctor and midwife and ensure that before fasting all tests and scans are updated to ensure health of mum and baby.

Ideally refrain from fasting or break your fast if you have or develop any of the following when pregnant:
1. gestational diabetes/liver problems/kidney problems/asthma
2. Hypertension
3. Pregnant with twins+
4. Any risk of premature labour
5. Dizziness, weakness, bradycardia
6. Notice less movement of the baby while fasting in the third trimester

Recommended dietary requirements during suhoor and futoor for pregnant women during Ramadan if they decide to fast:
1. Well balanced diet
2. Foods high in calcium and iron
3. Folic acid and vitamin D as recommended
4. Foods high in protein
5. More water than non-pregnant aiming for at least 10 glasses of water between futoor and suhoor to avoid dehydration

Things to avoid while pregnant:
1. Raw and uncooked meat, fish (inc high mercury fish) and raw eggs (may contain Listeria)
2. Caffeine
3. Unpasteurised milk and all of its products

Main point is to ensure your health and your baby’s health and to get plenty of rest and do not pressurise yourself if you are feeling unwell.

Fasting during Ramadan is known as intermittent fasting. The body utilises its sugar stores first and then looks to the body’s fat stores. Only in starvation would the body start breaking down protein stores for energy. During Ramadan, the body would not go into starvation as food and drink can be consumed from sunset to sunrise.

By not consuming anything for at least 12 hours, the body has time to concentrate on removing toxins from the body and so has a detox effect.

Scientists have also been studying the link between diet, gut health and mental wellbeing and have found that fasting can lead to the release of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) in the brain.
This has been shown to protect brain cells and could reduce depression and anxiety, as well as the risk of developing dementia.

Many people have researched and created diets with intermittent fasting. Muslims have been doing this for over 1400 years! So with all the benefits of this month, it has also been scientifically proven to have benefits on the body and mind. Of course, there are those that would be exempt from fasting if they have any medical conditions, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and children.

Happy iftar!

Brilliant query yesterday during my inaugural “live” session...
Tooth whitening during pregnancy: Personally, I strongly advise against teeth whitening escapades during the blessed state of and whilst nourishing a little one by . It’s absolutely crucial for mums-to-be to regularly attend their routine and appointments, enabling us to guarantee that your oral well-being remains in absolute mint condition 🥰
