Tips for the first week with a palate expander
The first few days may feel a little unfamiliar, but most children adapt surprisingly quickly. Here are five ways to make the first week easier:
🗣️ Practise speaking aloud
Reading, singing or chatting at home can help your child’s speech return to normal within a few days.
🥣 Start with softer foods
Choose yoghurt, pasta, soup, scrambled eggs and other easy-to-chew options. Once your child feels more comfortable, they can gradually return to their usual diet — while avoiding sticky sweets and cutting hard foods into smaller pieces.
🪥 Keep the expander clean
Brush twice a day, paying particular attention to the appliance and the areas around it. Interdental brushes can help clean places that are difficult to reach.
đź’™ Expect some pressure
A feeling of pressure in the upper jaw during activation is normal. If needed, use age-appropriate pain relief as advised by your orthodontist or pharmacist.
↔️ Do not worry about a new gap
A space may appear between the upper front teeth during expansion. This usually means the appliance is working, and the gap will often begin to close once expansion is complete.
Most children adjust within a few days. If your child experiences significant pain or you have any concerns, contact your orthodontic team for advice.
