Your OSCE station starts before you walk through the door.
You get two minutes outside the room, and how you use them often decides how the next few minutes go. Here is a simple routine to follow:
1️⃣ Know what the station is testing: history taking, treatment planning, or a patient concern.
2️⃣ Pick out the key details: the patient’s name, their medical history, and any medications that could affect your management.
3️⃣ Plan your route and know your opening line before you walk in.
4️⃣ Start with an open question, then explore ideas, concerns and expectations.
5️⃣ Explain everything clearly and check the patient’s understanding.
6️⃣ Watch the clock. With one minute left, begin closing the station.
And when the station ends, leave it there. Don’t analyse it and don’t carry it into the next one. New door, new station, fresh start.
OSCE success is not only about dentistry. It is about how you perform once the clock starts.
