Where does digital dentistry actually begin?

For many clinicians, the challenge isn’t access to technology - it’s understanding how the different pieces fit together.

Intraoral scanning, digital photography, CBCT, CAD design, 3D printing and digital treatment planning all have a place within the modern digital workflow.

Our education is designed to build that understanding from the foundations upwards, helping clinicians understand not just how to use digital tools, but where, when and why they can be applied in clinical practice.

Whether you’re taking your first steps into digital dentistry or looking to build confidence across your existing workflows, a strong foundation makes everything that follows easier.

DON'T JUST WATCH EXOCAD BEING USED. LEARN TO USE IT.

Join us on 28th November 2026 for a full day, hands on Introduction to Exocad workshop in Norwich.

Whether you're completely new to Exocad or have explored the software but haven't yet developed the confidence to design independently, this course is designed to give you a practical starting point.

What will you learn?
→ Setting up and navigating cases
→ Crown design and restorative anatomy
→ Bridge design
→ Splint design
→ Digital mock-ups

This isn't a day of sitting through presentations. You'll be working with Exocad, understanding the decisions behind each design and putting what you learn into practice.

Small group. Practical guidance. Real CAD experience.

With limited attendees, there'll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, work through challenges and receive individual support.

Planning it digitally is one thing. Putting that plan into practice is another.

Our hands on education in guided implant surgery is designed to take clinicians through the workflow beyond the theory - working with planning software, understanding implant positioning and guide design, before translating the digital plan into practical surgical exercises.

It’s an opportunity to plan, practise and understand each stage of the workflow with guidance from experienced digital clinicians.

Because confidence in guided surgery comes from understanding both sides of the workflow: the digital plan and its clinical ex*****on.

From digital design to something you can hold in your hands.

3D printing has become an increasingly valuable part of the digital dental workflow, allowing clinicians to manufacture models, surgical guides, splints, provisionals and more directly from digital data.

But successful printing goes beyond pressing print.

Understanding design, material selection, orientation, supports, printing parameters and post processing all contribute to the accuracy and quality of the final result.

At the IDDA, we focus on understanding the complete workflow and how to apply it effectively in clinical practice.

Digital design is about more than knowing where to click.

Working in exocad brings together clinical understanding, restorative principles and digital decision making, turning patient data into a restoration designed with function, fit and the final clinical result in mind.

Understanding the software is one part of the workflow. Understanding why you're making each design decision is what makes it clinically valuable.

At the IDDA, CAD design is integrated throughout our digital dentistry education, helping clinicians build the confidence to take greater control of their digital workflows.

A surgical guide is only as accurate as its design, fit and clinical ex*****on.

In this case, Dr. Chris Lefkaditis demonstrates a Cowellmedi closed sleeve surgical guide ahead of implant placement, highlighting the minimal deviation and smooth drill guidance achieved through a well designed guided workflow.

But predictable guided surgery starts long before drilling.

Accurate digital planning, appropriate guide design, stable seating and verification of fit are all essential to ensuring the planned implant position can be transferred reliably to the patient.

It’s a good example of where digital dentistry delivers its real value: using the right planning and workflow to make treatment more controlled, predictable and clinically efficient.

These principles form part of the digital implant workflows explored throughout IDDA postgraduate education.
