Flossing is one of those things many people know they should do, but are not always sure if they are doing it properly.
Brushing cleans the surfaces of your teeth, but it does not fully clean the tight spaces between them. That is where floss or interdental brushes can help.
The key is to be gentle and consistent.
When using floss, guide it carefully between the teeth rather than snapping it down onto the gums. Curve the floss into a soft “C” shape around the side of each tooth, then gently move it up and down. This helps clean just under the gumline, where plaque can easily build up.
For some people, interdental brushes may be more suitable than floss, especially if the gaps between the teeth are a little wider. Your dentist or hygienist can show you the right size and technique for your mouth.
Ideally, you should clean between your teeth once a day. It does not have to be complicated, but it does need to become part of your routine.
The benefits can be huge: fresher breath, healthier gums, less plaque build-up and a lower risk of gum disease and decay between the teeth.
If your gums bleed when you first start, do not panic. It can be a sign that the gums are inflamed and need regular, gentle cleaning. If bleeding continues, it is best to book an appointment so we can check what is going on.
Your toothbrush does a lot, but it cannot do everything.
