We say this a lot, so let us explain what it actually means.

Monitoring is not doing nothing. It's an active decision to track how something is developing rather than start treatment before the timing is right.

That might mean watching how adult teeth are coming through, checking whether crowding is getting worse, or seeing how the bite is changing as a child grows.
Sometimes waiting gives us a much clearer picture, and in some cases, it means treatment isn't needed at all.

So when we say we're monitoring, we're watching carefully and making a judgement call. Not leaving it to chance 👀

If this is a term you've heard but weren't quite sure about, hope that helps. And as always, drop us a DM if you want to chat 💬

No two smiles are the same, even when they look similar on the surface.

Two children might both have crowding, but the reason behind it can be completely different. One might need early guidance. The other might just need monitoring. Looking at them side by side you might not spot the difference, but the right plan for each is completely distinct.

That's why we never have a one-size-fits-all approach. The right decision comes from looking properly first, not just pattern-matching to what something looks like 🧩

If you've ever been told different things about the same smile, we'd be happy to talk it through 💬

When is the right time to see an orthodontist?

This is probably the question we get asked most.

The honest answer? It depends more on your child's development than on their age. But around 7 is often a really helpful time for a first check, not because treatment starts then, it usually doesn't, but because we can start to see how things are developing and give you a proper steer.

Sometimes we monitor. Sometimes there's something worth addressing early. And sometimes the most useful thing we can say is: everything looks fine, see you in a year ✔️

Signs it might be worth coming in: crowding, teeth coming through in odd positions, crossbites, mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or if the bite just doesn't seem to close quite right.

There is something so lovely about reaching the point where you can smile without thinking about it 💙

For Hilary, this journey was about more than just her teeth. It was about feeling more comfortable in herself again. When gaps in your teeth start to bother you, it can affect those small everyday moments more than people realise.

What comes through so clearly is how much a careful, supportive approach matters. Having a plan that feels thoughtful, regular check-ins, and time to ask questions can make the whole experience feel much more manageable.

We’re really grateful Hilary shared her story. It is such a gentle reminder that orthodontic treatment can make a real difference, not just to your smile, but to how you feel in it.

If gaps in your teeth have been on your mind, Invisalign and orthodontic treatment at The Oakwood Clinic can be a good place to start exploring your options.

We’re here when you’re ready.

Tooth School 🍊

Oranges can absolutely be part of a healthy diet, but they are also acidic, and that is something worth knowing when it comes to protecting teeth.

This is one of those topics where it is not about labelling foods as good or bad. It is about understanding how everyday habits affect enamel over time.

When you eat or drink something acidic, the surface of the teeth can soften for a short while. Brushing straight away might feel like the right thing to do, but in that moment it can actually add to wear.

Giving it a little time before brushing can be a much kinder approach for your teeth.

Small changes like having acidic foods with meals, drinking water afterwards, and waiting before brushing can all help protect your smile.

Simple, practical advice is what Tooth School is all about from your local dentist and orthodontic team in North London 🦷

Children’s dentistry should feel calm, gentle, and reassuring 💙

For many children, visiting the dentist can feel unfamiliar at first. For parents, that can bring its own worries too. That is why we believe a calm, patient-first approach matters so much at The Oakwood Clinic.

We take time to help children feel settled, explaining everything in a simple, friendly way and never rushing the experience. Sometimes the most important part of an appointment is helping a child feel safe enough to come back with confidence next time.

A positive early experience can make such a difference. It helps children build trust and feel more comfortable with dental and orthodontic care as they grow.

We also understand the importance of early orthodontic guidance. In some cases, seeing a specialist orthodontist earlier can help identify and guide development while everything is still growing.

Our aim is to make visits feel relaxed for children and reassuring for parents at our North London clinic 😊

Get in touch if you’d like to book a gentle visit for your child.
