Specialist children’s dentistry with sedation options

For some children, dental treatment can feel overwhelming, especially if they are anxious, very young, or in need of lengthy appointments.

Our specialist paediatric dentist can assess your child, explain the options clearly, and advise whether sedation may be appropriate.

This may be worth considering if your child is nervous about treatment, has struggled at previous appointments, or is waiting a long time for NHS care.

Did you know that more than one tooth replacement option can be used in the same case?

Sometimes, the best outcome comes from combining different treatments — each carefully selected for that specific case.
In this case, we used dental implants, dental crowns and dental bridges.

The right solution depends on the patient’s bite, remaining teeth, bone support, aesthetics and long-term maintenance.
A tailored approach helps create a result that is functional, natural-looking and suited to the individual.

Meet Rooz Disvalar, our new general dentist at Pond Square Dental.

Rooz graduated with Honours from Cardiff University and has a particular interest in restorative and aesthetic dentistry.

His approach is centred on biomimetic dentistry: preserving natural tooth structure wherever possible and using advanced adhesive techniques to restore teeth carefully and predictably.
He also enjoys creating natural-looking smile makeovers with composite bonding, porcelain veneers and minimally invasive treatment planning.

We are delighted to welcome Rooz to the team.

Tooth decay is not always painful.
In fact, many cavities develop gradually and without obvious symptoms in the early stages.

That is why regular dental examinations are so important — earlier diagnosis often means simpler and less invasive treatment.

Early signs of tooth decay can include:
• Sensitivity to cold or sweet foods
• Food trapping between teeth
• White, brown, or dark marks
• Rough areas on the tooth surface

Tooth decay develops when plaque bacteria produce acid that weakens the tooth over time. Early enamel damage may sometimes be stabilised with fluoride and improved oral care, but once a cavity forms, the tooth will usually require treatment.

To help reduce the risk of tooth decay:
• Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
• Clean between the teeth daily
• Reduce the frequency of sugary snacks and drinks

If you notice sensitivity, food trapping, or changes in a tooth, having it assessed early can help preserve more healthy tooth structure.

A natural-looking smile transformation is often the result of careful planning across multiple disciplines — not a single treatment.

In this case, a staged multidisciplinary approach allowed us to improve function, stability, and aesthetics while maintaining a natural appearance throughout treatment.

Orthodontics was used to improve tooth position and create the ideal foundation for the next stages of care.
Multiple implants replaced missing teeth and restored long-term support and function.
Dental crowns were then carefully designed to create balance, strength, and a result that felt natural to the patient.

Complex dentistry works best when each stage is planned collaboratively.
By coordinating treatment across disciplines, we can ensure every step supports both the final aesthetic outcome and long-term functionality.

The best composite bonding should not look like composite bonding.
This case focused on subtle refinements to shape, texture, and edge symmetry to maintain a natural appearance while improving overall balance.
Small adjustments can make a significant difference:
• Smoother, more harmonious tooth proportions
• Refinement of naturally uneven edges
• Preservation of natural character and light reflection
The goal with composite bonding is not to create overly perfect teeth.
It is to produce results that feel believable, balanced, and appropriate for the individual smile.
Careful layering, contouring, and finishing are what allow restorations to blend seamlessly with natural enamel.

Can a tooth infection go away on its own?

The short answer is no.

Pain from a dental infection may settle temporarily, but the infection itself usually remains active inside the tooth.

Because the infection is protected within the tooth structure, the body cannot fully remove the bacteria on its own.

Without treatment, a tooth infection can lead to:
• Increasing pain or swelling
• Formation of a dental abscess
• Spread of infection into surrounding tissues

A common misconception is that antibiotics alone “fix” the problem.
Antibiotics may help control swelling temporarily, but they do not remove the source of infection inside the tooth.

Definitive treatment is usually needed, such as:
• Root canal treatment
• Extraction of the tooth when it cannot be predictably restored

Early assessment often means more treatment options and a better long-term outcome.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, swelling, or sensitivity, it is important to seek professional advice promptly.
