"I was looking for a dentist I could really rely on, and I’ve decided to stay with this dentist for the rest of my time in London.

The dentist, Dr Rahul Makwana, is gentle and calm, but I can tell he is always enthusiastic about his work. My visit to the dentist was pleasant and left me feeling safe. The hygienist, Maria Kaszuba, is also great. I will regularly arrange dental hygiene check-ups, too. Furthermore, the reception team is friendly and provides a quick response.

A beautifully white smile can look healthy — but whiteness itself isn't a measure of oral health.

Natural teeth vary considerably in shade, which means a slightly darker or warmer tooth colour doesn't automatically mean your teeth are unhealthy.

What matters more?

Healthy teeth and gums

Effective brushing and interdental cleaning

The Dental Centre has been supporting UCL students and staff for over 60 years, and you’ll find us at 139 Euston Road, around a 10-minute walk from UCL’s main Gower Street campus.

If you can eat comfortably, your teeth look fine and you’re not experiencing any pain, it can be tempting to think there’s nothing for your dentist to check.

But a dental examination is about much more than looking for the source of a toothache.

Your dentist can assess:

Your teeth for signs of decay, wear, cracks or other changes

Your gums and overall gum health

The soft tissues inside your mouth

Existing fillings, crowns and other dental work

Any changes or symptoms you may have noticed since your last visit

Some dental and oral health problems may not cause obvious symptoms in their earlier stages, which is one reason regular examinations can be valuable.

And how often should you go?

There isn’t one answer that applies to everyone. Your dentist will recommend a recall interval based on your individual oral health and risk factors.

So, no pain is certainly something to be happy about — but it doesn’t necessarily tell us the whole story.
