The open bite is a type of malocclusion that corresponds to the absence of contact between the upper and lower teeth, which can give the illusion of a “crooked mouth”.
An open bite may involve a disharmony of a skeletal nature, or be related to parafunctional habits. This alteration can cause some disturbances with consequences in terms of breathing, phonetics and masticatory function, in addition to its aesthetic conditioning. It will be even more complicated to solve if we are facing an open and crossbite situation.
In young patients, still with deciduous dentition (infant open bite), or with mixed dentition, the placement of a removable appliance, normally composed of a palatal crib, may be the most indicated alternative to “close” the space in disocclusion, namely in cases in which the open bite is provoked by certain parafunctional habits, such as, for example, the thrusting of the tongue. In situations where there are changes in phonetics, the use of speech therapy may also be considered in addition.
