When should you hire your first employee? How do you know?

You should decide when to hire your first employee by asking yourself two simple questions. Firstly, can you keep up with the demand yourself? And secondly, if hiring went wrong, can you afford the worst case scenario?

On Episode 19 of Manrina's Mentorship playlist, Shaz Memon told us about hiring his first employee at 22. The first flag was when Shaz found himself falling behind deadlines, having received so much work he could no longer cope alone. But he was reluctant to take the leap.

That's when it's time to stop asking whether it will work, and ask what the worst case costs you.
The number is almost always smaller than the one in your head.

The method:
Monthly cost × the months it takes to know if they're any good.
Shaz Memon's first hire was part-time at £1,000 a month. He reckoned three months to know either way. Maximum downside: £3,000.

That's the entire decision.
When you know you can afford the worst case scenario, it's time to take the leap.

Nobody teaches dentists how to be chosen.

We are taught to be good. Five years of it, then years more of courses and cases and getting better at the thing itself. The unspoken promise is that excellence is enough, and that if the work is good, the right patients turn up.

It is not true, and I see the evidence most weeks. Genuinely brilliant clinicians sit with quiet books while less capable dentists are booked out for months. The difference between them is almost never clinical.

The difference is that one of them is known for something and the other one is not.

That is not a comfortable thing for a profession built on merit. It sounds like it rewards the loudest people, and it doesn't. It rewards the clearest. The dentist who is known for one thing gets asked for that thing. The dentist who is known for everything gets asked for nothing.

I have written down what I have learned about closing that gap, in a short book called Stop Convincing, Start Being Recommended. It is free. It is five shifts, and none of them require you to become someone you are not.

If you are excellent at your work and quietly frustrated that it hasn't translated, it was written for you.

How to get claude to work in the background?
In this snippet of Dr Manrina's latest Ai Webinar, she taught viewers how to use Claude in the background to do real tasks. Whilst she ran the webinar, Claude wrote her a practise brief, read through a contract and organised her practise notes. And the outcome was that Claude noticed a free trial about to run out - and alerted her of it before it auto renewed. This is an example of the new era of AI. If you are just using it like a search engine, you are falling behind.

This AI webinar ran last month with attendees from all around the world. Dentists logged on to learn how to use AI beyond the chat. Dr Manrina used live demonstrations and explanations to teach how Claude can be implemented to practise to solve real problems without you lifting a finger.

How do you network in marketing?
Shaz Memon tells us that a bold move can get you pretty far.

In Episode 19 of Manrina's Mentorship Podcast, expert marketeer Shaz Memon of Digimax shared with us all his expertise on marketing, personal brands, and how being bold and working hard can really pay off. He told us one story in particular that really stuck with us - about how he met James Caan from Dragon's Den at an event, and boldly told him, "If I was you, I would be really embarrassed of my personal brand." The next day, he received a call from Caan challenging him to stand on business and offering him the opportunity to create some designs. He had 3 days to complete the designs, but Shaz went even further, challenging himself to complete 9 designs overnight. Comment for Part 2 to hear what happened next...
