Me watching the consequences of not wearing retainers unfold... 👀🍿

I promise I’m not being dramatic when I say retainers are for life 😅

Every week I meet patients who say:
🦷 “I only stopped wearing them for a little while...”
🦷 “They still fitted, just a bit tight...”
🦷 “I thought my teeth would stay where they were...”

Unfortunately, teeth have a habit of moving. That’s completely normal biology.

What starts as one missed night can become a week.
A week becomes a month.

And before you know it, the retainers no longer fit and those beautifully straight teeth start to drift.

The frustrating part? The movement is often completely preventable.
✨ Wear your retainers as instructed.
✨ Store them safely in their box.
✨ Replace them if they become damaged or lost.
✨ Attend your retainer review appointments.

👇How long have you been wearing your retainers for?

Hmmm…wonder why that is? 🤦🏽‍♀️

“Will Invisalign work for my bite?”

ChatGPT: ❌❌❌

The reality is that no app, AI tool, or online quiz can accurately diagnose your bite from a few photos or a quick description.

Orthodontics is about so much more than straight teeth.
It’s about understanding how your teeth fit together, how your jaws function, facial proportions, tooth movements, gum health, long-term stability, and the biological limits of treatment.

That’s why orthodontists spend:
🎓 5 years training as dentists
🎓 Followed by a further 3 years of specialist orthodontic training
Before we’re qualified to diagnose and treat complex bite problems.

Can AI be helpful? Absolutely.

Can it tell you whether Invisalign is the right treatment for your specific bite? Not reliably.

Every smile is unique, and what works brilliantly for one person may be completely unsuitable for another.

If you’re wondering whether Invisalign could work for you, the answer isn’t in a chatbot—it’s in a consultation with a trained professional who can properly assess your teeth, bite, and treatment goals.

🦷 There’s no substitute for expertise.

1️⃣ CHEW (yes, really!)
It sounds backwards, but gently chewing on soft foods can actually help reduce soreness by increasing blood flow around the teeth and helping them adapt to the new forces.

2️⃣ Use orthodontic wax
If a bracket or wire is rubbing your cheek, don’t try to “tough it out”. A small amount of wax creates a protective barrier and can prevent painful ulcers from developing.

3️⃣ Stick to softer foods for a few days
Think pasta, rice, soup, yoghurt, eggs and smoothies. Your teeth may be tender after adjustments, so give them a break from crusty bread, nuts and hard snacks.

4️⃣ Keep your braces spotlessly clean
Plaque and trapped food can make your gums sore, swollen and irritated. Good brushing and cleaning around your braces can help your mouth feel much more comfortable.

5️⃣ DON’T stop wearing your elastics
This is a big one. Many patients stop wearing elastics because their teeth feel sore. Unfortunately, inconsistent wear often means treatment takes longer and can actually make your teeth more tender when you start again.

⭐ Bonus tip:
Most discomfort peaks within the first 24–48 hours and improves quickly afterwards. If something feels sharp, a wire is poking, or you’re worried about anything, contact your orthodontic team.

An orthodontist’s version of a perfect day.

Retention is where all the hard work pays off.
Consistent retainer wear, good oral hygiene, and regular reviews help keep your smile looking exactly as it should for years to come.

Keep doing the little things, and your smile will thank you for it. 😁

Your teeth are for chewing food... not opening bottles, tearing packaging, or holding things when your hands are full.

Using your teeth as tools might seem harmless, but it can cause a surprising amount of damage over time.

From least dramatic to most dramatic, here’s what can happen:
⚠️ Tiny chips and wear
Repeatedly biting hard objects can create small chips and micro-cracks in the enamel that may not be visible straight away.
⚠️ Cracked fillings and composite bonding
That “just one time” bottle cap opening could be enough to loosen or fracture existing dental work.
⚠️ Damaged veneers
Veneers are strong when used as intended, but they’re not designed to withstand the forces involved in opening packaging or biting hard objects.
⚠️ Broken retainers and orthodontic appliances
Using your teeth to grip or pull things can place excessive force on teeth and attachments, potentially damaging retainers, bonded wires, or orthodontic appliances.
⚠️ Fractured teeth
A larger crack can develop suddenly, sometimes requiring extensive treatment such as crowns, root canal treatment, or even extraction.
⚠️ Dental emergencies
Yes, people really do break teeth opening bottles. What starts as a party trick can end as an emergency dental appointment.

The safest tool for opening a bottle is a bottle opener.

Your teeth have enough work to do already. 😅

Have you ever chipped a tooth doing something you definitely shouldn’t have?
