KAIZEN TIP - Taking Shades

At Kaizen we strongly recommend clear and consistent communication pathways with your dental laboratory to reduce the risk of errors occurring.

We advise taking the shade for any direct or indirect restoration before any treatment - this ensures the shade is taken when the teeth are at their most natural colour (during treatment teeth can dehydrate, and temporarily appear whiter). Taking the shade prior to carrying out treatment reduces the chance of a colour mismatch.

Air abrasion is essential to adhesive dentistry. Protecting the adjacent teeth whilst doing so are just as important.

The VENEER-LAY

Have you heard the term veneerlay and wondered what is that prep design? How does it work? We hope the post below helps clear up some of the common confusion surrounding the veneerlay prep design.

The term veneerlay is essentially when we "veneer" or cover the buccal aspect of the tooth whilst also onlay'ing the occlusal surface. So you can think of it as a combination of an onlay and veneer.

It is commonly used for premolars to widen the buccal corridor or to improve the appearance of root filled teeth which may discolour over time. So most times we cover the buccal aspect for aesthetic purposes.

In the case breakdown below we have done a veneerlay on a second premolar. The patient had a failing direct composite (pin retained) which they disliked. It had stained overtime and there was secondary caries present. See the annotated pictures for a step by step breakdown.

Hope it is useful!

KAIZEN TIP - protecting the adjacent teeth

When doing lengthy preparations, it can be hard to avoid damaging the adjacent teeth, particularly during inter-proximal reduction.

Wedge guards are wedges with a metal band attached that can be placed between the teeth prior to drilling for direct or indirect restorations. They are a quick, simple and effective way to protect the adjacent teeth from iatrogenic damage during the prep.

Notice on the pictures below, the distal wedge guard has been caught with the bur. The mesial surface of the second molar has been protected from damage. This is particularly useful when breaking the contacts during a crown preparation.
