Dear Patient,

We are writing to you following a BBC broadcast aired on Friday 6 February 2026, which we believe sound misleading and may have caused unnecessary concern. We would like to clarify the facts and explain the situation clearly.

A corrupted memory card was identified within our sterilisation monitoring system. As a result, no sterilisation cycle data was recorded for the period between 28 August 2024 and 16 September 2024. The issue was identified promptly and addressed immediately.

This matter related solely to the recording and storage of data. During this period, sterilisation cycles continued to be run, however the data from those cycles was not retained due to the corrupted memory card. There is therefore no recorded data for this time, rather than evidence of a failure of the sterilisation process.

Following further review, we have now replaced our autoclaves with new systems, ensuring that sterilisation data can be securely retrieved and monitored at all times, even in the event of a technical issue. This additional step has been taken to further strengthen our systems and provide reassurance going forward.

On the advice of NHS Shetland, we are writing to patients who attended the practice during this time to ensure transparency and to correct any misunderstanding arising from the broadcast.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the practice and a member of our team will be happy to assist you. We remain fully committed to patient safety, openness, and continuous improvement.

Due to the ongoing snow and difficult travel conditions, we will be trying to open under guidance from our South office.

However, please bear with us if there are delays or reduced services, as some staff may be unable to make it in safely.

We had a fantastic time at our works Christmas do last night πŸŽ„βœ¨ It was a lovely evening spent celebrating the year, enjoying great company, plenty of laughs, and taking a moment to appreciate the amazing team we have.

The evening was also a chance for us to say a very special thank you and goodbye to our much-loved receptionist Abby. From the very first greeting at the desk to the care and kindness she shows every single day, she has been a huge part of our practice. Her hard work, professionalism, and warm personality have helped build such strong and lasting relationships with our patients, and she has always gone above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome.

She has been a truly valued member of our team and will be deeply missed by both colleagues and patients alike. While we’re sad to see her go, we are so grateful for everything she has contributed and wish her nothing but happiness, success, and exciting new opportunities in her next chapter πŸ’πŸ’›

We do have a new dentist lined up to take on Diana’s patients. His application was submitted to the NHS Health Board on 10th November 2025, and we are currently awaiting approval.

In the meantime, if you require urgent care, our other dentists are available for emergency appointments.
