Not every cavity needs a filling. 🦷 Let’s talk about why.
It sounds a bit backwards coming from a dental team, right? But the truth is, dentistry is moving toward preservation, not just drilling and filling at the first sign of trouble.
Here is why we might recommend watching a cavity instead of filling it right away:
The Power of Re-mineralization: When a cavity is in its absolute earliest stage (incipient decay), it only affects the outer enamel. At this point, it can actually be reversed! With extra TLC, high-fluoride toothpaste, and great flossing, the tooth can heal itself.
The “Watch and Wait” Approach: If a tiny spot isn’t actively growing or causing pain, we prefer to monitor it at your regular checkups. No need to alter a tooth’s natural structure if we don’t have to.
Location Matters: Minor decay on the smooth surfaces of your teeth is much easier to reverse than a cavity hiding deep in the grooves of your molars.
Our goal isn’t to find things to fix—it’s to keep your natural smile healthy, strong, and intact for as long as possible.
The best way to catch those reversible spots before they turn into actual fillings? Routine checkups. 😉
