A Study led by the University of Leeds has highlighted the oral health challenges that autistic children face. The team have collaborated with autistic children, their families and early years professionals to co-design an 'Autism Toothcare' support package with autistic-specific advice on how to improve oral health habits.

The website features videos, downloadable resources and a forum for parents to share their experiences and advice. Its aim is to provide parents with practical, tailored solutions that focus on toothbrushing, going to the dentist and eating and drinking.
One in four autistic children have tooth decay by the age of five. Whilst this number is similar to the wider childhood population, autistic children are less likely to visit the dentist and twice as likely to need dental treatment under general anaesthetic.
Sensory differences can make toothbrushing painful, dental visits can also be overwhelming, with bright lights, unfamiliar smells, strange tastes, and unexpected sounds or touch. Some autistic people experience social communication differences, making it hard for them to express if they are in dental pain. In addition, repetitive behaviours or strong preferences may lead to limited diets, often high in sugar, which can increase the risk of tooth decay.
The website offers tips and advice on brushing teeth, visiting the dentist, and healthy eating and drinking for families of autistic children. It offers information about different toothbrush types, toothpaste options, brushing tips, routines, sensory preparation, and ways to support your child during brushing.
There are helpful guides to reducing sugary foods and drinks, introducing tooth-friendly options, mealtime tips, exploring food outside meals, and preparing food and drinks. Additional tips can be found about managing dental visits, preparing for the appointment, communicating during the visit, and supporting your child afterwards.
At the Poplars we will aim to support you in whatever way we can, so if you have any concerns or questions regarding any of the available resources please don't hesitate to contact the practice on 01132 564161
