Dear Patients,

The Chief Dental Officer has announced that dental practices across England will be allowed to reopen for face to face dental care from Monday, June 8th.

WE'RE RE-OPENING

OUR Practice will be open from Monday June 8th. However, as the risk of COVID 19 is still within the UK, we will not be back to 'business as usual'. be open from Monday June 8th. However, as the risk of COVID 19 is still within the UK, we will not be back to 'business as usual'.

We will be open Monday to Friday 8.15am-5pm. We will only be able to support patients who are in pain and need urgent care. Appointment availability will be limited so that we can implement enhanced infection control procedures to help reduce the risks to patients and colleagues.

We ask all patients to be flexible so that we can focus our care on those patients who need it the most.

We will not, until further notice, be providing appointments for routine care, hygienist services or cosmetic treatments.

If you need treatment before June 8th, please call us so we can arrange a telephone consultation.

KEEPING YOU SAFE

Infection control is always our top priority, you will have seen the efforts we go to on your previous visits. However, we will enhance this still further in light of the possible risk of COVID 19.

Infection control is always our top priority, you will have seen the efforts we go to on your previous visits. However, we will enhance this still further in light of the possible risk of COVID 19.

Patients attending the practice will experience a few changes, including:

- Completion of a pre-appointment screening call - this is essential. Your appointment can not take place without having first completed this call. A colleague from the practice will call you the day before or the morning of your appointment.
- Social distancing will be required in waiting areas and at reception
- Use of hand sanitiser on arrival and exit is required
- All visitors must wear a face-covering in reception/waiting areas and while walking through the practice
- Staff will be wearing PPE, this may feel unfriendly and different, but we're still the same friendly team!
- All notices will be removed from display if you need access to any policy, complaint procedure, practice information leaflets, please email us and it will be sent by email to you. Our email address is [email protected]

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

- Punctuality is essential; please arrive on time, if you are early, please wait in your car. If you are late, we may not be able to see you.
- Please attend alone. Children or vulnerable patients with appointments who need an es**rt should do so with one other person only, ideally a person from the same household.
- Leave all non-essential personal items (bags, coats, shopping, pushchairs) at home or hidden from view in your car. Ideally, attend the surgery with only your keys and wallet placed in your pocket or stored in a small zip-lock plastic bag.
- Payment by card is preferred
- Toilets will be out of use for patients except on request so that it can be cleaned immediately after use
We can not guarantee your appointment will be with your regular dentist due to limited appointment availability. - - --- Please be flexible so we can provide urgent care to all that need it.
- Please do not attend the practice without an appointment
- If you show any symptoms after attending the practice please phone us

All these measures will be explained to you on your pre-appointment call if you are uncertain or have any questions, please ask on that call.

MAKING APPOINTMENTS

If you are in pain and need of dental care, please call us during surgery hours, your needs will be assessed, and if required, an appointment will be made for you.

Appointment time and PPE are a limited and precious resource, failure to attend a booked appointment will be exceptionally wasteful during this time. If you can not attend a booked appointment for any reason you must call the practice as soon as possible to cancel. No further appointments being offered to any patient who fails to attend without notifying us of your need to cancel.

NEW PATIENTS

If you have not attended Nursery Lane Dental Practice before and are in need of urgent care, we can only offer appointments on a private basis. At this time, we are not able to welcome new NHS patients to our practice.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED

It will take some time for services to return to normal. Please be patient.

We will be updating this page and sending emails to patients to keep you informed. When we can offer routine check-ups, reminder texts will be sent to notify you.

Thank you

02/04/2020

Dear Patients, as the ongoing restrictions from NHS England to dental care in the UK continues, we are open during our normal working hours for telephone triage if you are having pain or require advice.

Following our previous post regarding self care solutions, here are a few more tips and pointers to help with problems you may be having.

Pain from gums:

- If there is bacteria or food debris trapped between the gum and the tooth, this can cause pain.
- Thoroughly clean the area with floss or a te-pe interdental brush . You could put corsodyl gel onto the brush to help clean the area
- Rinsing thoroughly with antibacterial mouthwash or warm salt water can help (but Corsodyl will stain your teeth so we don't recommend this for long term use).

Pain from ulcers:

-
Mouth ulcers can be a sign of underlying medical conditions such as iron deficiency so shouldn't be ignored. - Any mouth ulcer which doesn't heal in two weeks should be checked by a dentist.
- To reduce the discomfort, you can try a topical anaesthetic gel such as Orajel.
- To help with healing of ulcers, Gengigel can be effective as well as soothing the pain.

Broken teeth:

-
If a tooth or filling has chipped or cracked, this can cause sensitivity from the tooth being exposed or pain to your tongue from sharp edges.
- The sensitivity can be reduced by rubbing a de- sensitising toothpaste onto the tooth and placing a temporary filling material over the broken corner until a more definitive filling can be placed.
- These temporary filling kits can be bought from your local pharmacy or supermarket and may help as short term measure until you can be seen.

27/03/2020

As this period of uncertainty over routine dental care continues, over the next few days we'll post some self-care tips to help with dental problems until we can resume your care.

Today we'll start with tooth sensitivity and pain from teeth, usually causing pain or sensitivity to hot and cold or a general tooth ache and pain on biting.

Decay is a bacterial infection of a tooth. If the bacteria gets close to the nerve in a tooth, it can cause the tooth to be acutely sensitive. As the inflammation of the nerve gets worse, the ligaments holding the tooth in position can also get inflamed which causes pain on biting.

If the tooth is acutely sensitive to temperature, antibiotics will not fix this. The decay needs to be removed to allow the tooth to heal. If the bacteria has caused irreversible damage to the nerve in the tooth then a root filling is required or the tooth needs to be extracted.

To help manage toothache until you can visit us, there are a few things that may help reduce the pain:

1- If there is a cavity in the tooth, a temporary filling material can be packed in to this space. These temporary filling kits are widely available from supermarkets or pharmacies.
2- Anti-inflammatory tablets (NSAIDs) can reduce the sensitivity. A combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol has been found to be beneficial if you can take them both - however, there are some reports that Ibuprofen may increase the symptoms of COVID-19 so Paracetamol alone is probably best if you have symptoms. Make sure you don't exceed the recommended dosage!
◦
Don’t stop taking the anti-inflammatory when the pain stops (or it will come back again!) You are wanting to reduce the inflammation of the nerve in the tooth which is causing the pain.
3- Desensitising toothpaste such as Sensodyne repair and protect or Colgate sensitive pro relief can help.
4 - Anaesthetic gel such as Orajel applied to the area can help to numb the pain.

5 - Clove Oil - This essential oil can be found in health food stores and you can apply it onto the painful tooth with a cotton bud. This works well if there is an exposed nerve due to deep decay but for it to work, you need to place it onto the exposed nerve
6- Keep your head elevated at night time- When you lie down to go to sleep, the blood pressure in the tooth can increase which increases pain. An extra pillow at night time can help
7 - Keep the area cold- reducing blood flow to an area will reduce the inflammation and pain. Do not apply ice directly to a tooth as this can increase the pain as toothaches are quite sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

26/03/2020

If you are self isolating and unable to leave the house then the last thing you want is to develop toothache.

Currently NHS England has taken the decision to cease all routine/non-urgent dentistry and it is unclear at this point when normal service will resume.

If you have a problem, please call the practice first on 0113 268 6508 and one of our dental team will provide telephone advice.

If you have a swelling on your face or difficulty swallowing, this requires urgent professional attention so don't be afraid to contact us for advice.

The practice is open for acute emergencies but we recommend everyone, especially those over 70 or at increased risk of severe illness due to COVID-19 follow stringent social distancing measures.

If you have symptoms of Coronavirus (new persistent cough and/or fever) you should not attend the practice.

23/03/2020

Dear Patients, due to the escalating situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, following guidance from NHS England the practice is now closed to routine dental care.
The safety of our patients, staff and the wider public is paramount.
If you are in severe pain or have a dental emergency please first call on 0113 268 6508 as we will be operating a locked door policy. Our practice team will provide information for self care or if necessary arrange for you to see our on-call dentist.
If you have symptoms or have been diagnosed with Covid-19, are in self isolation due to symptoms or a member of your household is self-isolating please call 111 for dental emergencies.
We will continue to update this page if there are further developments.
We thank all our patients for their understanding.
We will continue to do everything we can to support your dental health and well-being during these unprecedented times, best wishes from all your team at Nursery Lane.
