To all my lovely patients, I’d like to give you an update on what’s happening at our practice.
After 23 years, the ever increasing workload of actually running the business finally got too much . There are only so many times you can update a menopause policy and stay up at night re-writing your data protection guidelines before you loose the will to live. I love the actual dentistry side of things and decided that in order to maintain my sanity, the answer was to sell the practice, but still work there. Someone else has the headache of running it then and I can enjoy what I do best, which is basically “ teeth “.
After 8 months of negotiations and stress the sale finally went through on Friday night.
The new owner, Mo has a practice in Liverpool but wants to expand into Leeds.
Emma and I will be working as normal.
The fees, Denplan, and everything else teeth related, including our lovely smiling faces remain the same, except we will be swapping Monday working to Wednesday in late July as the new owner is working on a Monday then.
There will be a new practice name and lots of structural changes as the practice is being expanded.I would like to assure you that the noisy stuff will be kept to an absolute minimum during surgery time but there will be some disruption so please bear with us.
I am excited about the future but the blip on my horizon is the loss of Clare. Our 30 years together, through thick and thin has come to an end.I don’t have the words to properly express how that makes me feel and have shed a fair few tears but life has to move on and she is now a practice manager at a much larger practice in Pudsey .
At present we have Marian on reception who is the practice manager at the Liverpool practice. As you can all appreciate, it is a steep learning curve for her and she is finding her feet, so please be gentle with her 🙏.
Here’s to the next chapter of our journey together.

“BHDC gets hold of knock off Mayan glue”

A new study has found that the glue used by ancient Mayans to stick gemstones to their teeth could have prevented tooth decay and infections.
The ancient Mayans – who lived 200–900 AD – used to decorate their teeth with gemstones as they believed their breath had a connection to the divine.
As a result, they used to file, polish and decorate their teeth to purify their breath. This usually happened as a rite to adulthood.
The Maya dentists drilled holes into their teeth and inserted the coloured stones, such as jade, turquoise, and pyrite, to the front of their teeth. They then applied a glue sealant.
However, a recent analysis, published by Science Magazine has found that the sealant glue used to stick the gemstones to their teeth had properties that prevented infections and tooth decay.

The properties found in the glue sealant makes it ‘remarkably durable’. It has allowed the majority of the gemstones to remain intact in the teeth for over 1,000 years.
Richard Kemeney of Science Magazine said: ‘The nature of the binding agent has long been a mystery.’
But the new study into the glue sealant found 150 organic molecules, many commonly found in plant resins.
Each ingredient has a specific task. Most important for them was the binding properties.’
For example, pine sap was one of the discovered ingredients. Research suggests that ingredients found in pine trees can fight dental bacteria and prevent tooth decay.
Sclareolide was also found on the teeth. This chemical compound found in Salvia plants has antibacterial properties.
As well as this, some sealants contained oils from mint plants which research shows could have anti-inflammatory properties.

Maya king, Janaab’ Pakal, died at 80 years old with nearly a full set of teeth and no tooth decay!

“Clare has managed to source some Mayan tooth glue from Guatemala, and in keeping with our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint we will be using it instead of normal filling material from now on” 😳
