Gum disease linked to severe COVID-19 complications.

There's never been a better time to book a hygiene appointment.

Defence against inflammation from gum disease can potentially protect COVID-19 patients against life-threatening respiratory complications.

This is according to research conducted by oral surgeon Dr Shervin Molayem and published in the California Dental Association Journal.

The new study links gum disease and COVID-19, suggesting the virus is more severe in the presence of inflammation caused by gum disease.

Bacteria in the gums travels through the body and spreads IL-6 protein, a harmful inflammatory. And high levels of IL-6 is a predictor for respiratory failure – carrying a 22 times higher risk for respiratory complications.

We are proud to say that due to cooperation and compliance from staff and patients, and investment in advanced PPE and enhanced cross infection control measures we have remained open since the first lock-down ended last June. We have been able to see all emergencies, urgencies and important maintenance cases, and continued to offer prevention control, routine check-ups and hygiene. Well done all!

To all our wonderful patients: Just to let you know that we are still open during this latest 'lock down'. We have had the opportunity since last summer to perfect even more stringent cross-infection control measures. We ask you to arrive on time for your appointments so that only one patient is in the practice at any one time. We completely change the air in the surgery between patients (so bring a jumper!) It is very important not to let your dental health go unchecked and allow potential problems to worsen. Regular dental check-ups include assessment of teeth for decay, gums for periodontal disease and the rest of the mouth to check for signs of oral cancer. If you wish to book please phone 01372 363060 - we only accept appointments by phone, and although normally welcome, currently we can't allow casual visits.
