🦷 “Do I need to wait until all my child’s baby teeth have fallen out before seeing an Orthodontist?”

No you don’t need to wait.

In fact, an early orthodontic assessment can sometimes be very helpful while your child still has some baby teeth.

Why?

Because we can assess how the adult teeth are developing, how the upper and lower jaws are growing and whether there are any problems that may benefit from early treatment or monitoring.

We may identify things such as:

🦷 Crowding — not enough space for adult teeth
🦷 Crossbites — upper teeth biting behind or inside the lower teeth
🦴 Narrow upper jaws — which can affect the bite and smile
🦷 Erupting teeth that may struggle to come through normally
😁 Prominent front teeth — which can be more vulnerable to injury

And importantly, an early assessment does not mean your child needs braces straight away.

Sometimes the best plan is simply to monitor their development and wait for the right time to treat.

Not every child needs braces straight away. In fact, sometimes the best treatment is to wait and monitor growth.

But an early orthodontic assessment can identify problems while your child is still developing - when we may have opportunities to guide growth and tooth development.

🦷👧 When should my child see an Orthodontist? 👦🦷

The answer might surprise you...

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that every child has an orthodontic assessment between the ages of 7 and 8.

This doesn't mean they'll need braces at this age it simply allows us to identify any problems early and decide whether treatment is needed now or whether it's best to monitor growth until the right time.

An early assessment can help identify:

✔️ Crossbites – where the top teeth bite inside the bottom teeth
✔️ Narrow upper jaws – which may benefit from early expansion while your child is still growing
✔️ Severe crowding – where there isn't enough space for all the adult teeth
✔️ Prominent front teeth – which may be at greater risk of injury if knocked
✔️ Impacted teeth – adult teeth that may not be able to erupt into the correct position
✔️ Bite problems – where the teeth or jaws are not developing as they should

Early treatment isn't right for every child - but an early assessment is.

In many cases, we'll simply monitor your child's growth and let you know the ideal time to begin treatment.
