What makes your tongue sad? A tongue depressor! Haha! Sorry.
But seriously. Your tongue can tell you a lot about your health, (and not just your oral health). A healthy colour is light to dark pink. A different colour could indicate an underlying health condition. It's important to check your tongue regularly, and know what signs to look for:

What different colours can indicate:

White tongue: Oral thrush, leukoplakia (a potentially precancerous condition)
Yellow tongue: Dehydration, jaundice, psoriasis (a skin condition)
Orange tongue: Poor oral hygiene, antibiotics, beta-carotene foods
Red tongue: Allergies, scarlet fever, vitamin B deficiency
Black tongue: Keratin buildup, diabetes, HIV
Purple tongue: Poor circulation, heart condition, Kawasaki disease (children under 5)
Green tongue: Certain medications, dry mouth
Blue tongue: Cyanosis, blood disorder, kidney disease
If you have a blue tongue, you should call your healthcare provider right away as cyanosis requires prompt medical attention.

These are not the only reasons for your tongue to change colour, things like poor oral hygiene and smoking can also cause this, but any change in your tongue's colour, it is recommended that you schedule a dental consultation.
Even if you wear full dentures and don't feel you need to see a dentist, it is still wise to have your oral health checked. An oral health check is part of our complimentary consultation when you make a denture appointment, so call us on 01563 510305.

It's National Smile Month! (13th May - 13th June).
Your smile is one of your most important assets, helping you to communicate, to eat and drink, and giving you confidence in your social life. It makes sense to give it the best care possible.
During National Smile Month (and beyond)! make sure to:
Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
Clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes
Use a mouthwash every day
Cut down on sugar
Brush your tongue too (yes, your tongue! Bacteria on the tongue can lead to halitosis or bad breath).
Gingivitis (gum inflammation) is reversible with these simple steps. If not treated, it can become periodontitis (gum disease, tooth loss,) which is not reversible.
During the COVID pandemic it was difficult to look after our teeth the way they deserve, and if gum disease has affected you and led to tooth loss, visit us at www.phdental.co.uk or call 01563 510305 to see how we can help.
Everyone deserves a healthy smile!

What Day is it Today? National Paranormal Day was created in 2013, which, appropriately for such a mysterious subject, is all anyone knows about it.When talking of the paranormal, most people think of ghosts, UFO's, crop circles, maybe vampires and Bigfoot. But even something as small as deja vu can be considered paranormal.
Although people have been experiencing unexplained phenomena for centuries, it's only recently that they have begun to be properly documented and investigated.

Did you know?

1) Three out of five people believe they have seen a ghost.

2) Pets are apparently sensitive to spirits. So if your cat sits up and stares for no reason, or your dog growls at an empty corner, it could be a ghost!

3) Children are also more likely to see ghosts than adults. Does your child have an imaginary friend? It might not be so imaginary....

4) Einstein believed in ghosts! He said the energy of the universe is constant and cannot be destroyed, it can transform into new energy and create ghosts.

5) Planning a romantic holiday to Venice? Poveglia island, which housed a plague quarantine station and a mental hospital, has been abandoned since 1968 and frequently features in paranormal TV shows as the most haunted place in the world.

Have you had any experiences you cannot explain? Let us know in the comments!
And if your dentures mysteriously disappear, or you need a set of fake fangs for Halloween, who you gonna call? Better call Paul!

What Day is it Today? It's International Womens Day!
Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day is celebrated to commemorate and honour women's accomplishments, raise awareness about gender disparities and discrimination, as well as promote global support for women.
Did you know?
The first National Womens Day was celebrated on 28th February 1909, and became International Womens Day in 1975.

IWD is recognized as an official national holiday in Armenia, Belarus, Cambodia, Cuba, Georgia, Laos, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine and Vietnam.

In China, many women are given a half-day off work.

In 1917, the celebration of Women's Day in Russia got them the right to vote.

What Day is it Today? 9th February is National Toothache Day!
While toothaches are not exactly to be celebrated, they serve an important purpose, bringing to our attention possible dental issues that need to be resolved.
A toothache can make it difficult to eat, sleep or even talk. Looking after your oral health by implementing a regular routine of brushing your teeth twice daily, limiting sweets and sugary drinks, avoiding ci******es, and visiting your dentist for regular checkups, you can wave goodbye to toothaches.
Severe tooth pain can be a sign tooth decay is at the point of attacking the nerve in the centre of the tooth. If this happens, the tooth may need to be removed.
While prevention is better than a cure, if you do reach the point where a toothache has led to tooth loss, you can contact us for a complimentary denture consultation, and we can help you smile with confidence again!

What Day is it Today? It's Dental Drill Appreciation Day!
Although visiting a dentist for a denture appointment is completely non invasive, and will not involve any drilling or painful procedures, not many people like having a dental drill used during their visits to their dentist, as the sound, the vibration or the knowledge that a dental procedure is underway can cause anxiety. (We specialise in treating nervous or anxious patients, so if you are struggling with these issues, please get in touch).
And yet use of a dental drill to remove tooth decay actually saves time in the chair, reduces potential pain and lets dentists work with much greater accuracy.
The modern dental drill also minimizes damage to surrounding teeth and gums.
On 26th January 1876 George Green invented the first electric dental drill, and so opened the way to ongoing research to further advance dental drill technology, so that one day, dental treatments may become truly pain free.
Did you know?
The first dental drill, the bow drill, was invented in 1728.
The earliest drills had a speed of 15rpm, as opposed to today's modern drills, which are most commonly 180,000rpm!

Oral Cancer Awareness Month
Do you know how to spot the symptoms of mouth cancer?
With early diagnosis, the chances of surviving mouth cancer are nine out of ten.
A mouth cancer check can be done at home and it takes less than one minute.
Look at your cheeks, gums, lips, tongue and tonsils.
Also check the roof and floor of your mouth, and your head and neck.
You are looking for red or white patches in the mouth, unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth head or neck, or mouth ulcers that do not heal within 3 weeks.
If you do spot anything, or even if you are not sure, contact your dentist as soon as possible.
Always remember, if in doubt, get it checked out!

What Day is it Today? It's World Smile Day!
The holiday was made to celebrate the creation of the smiley face. You may think it’s a relatively modern thing, but the smiley face was actually created back in 1963 by a graphic artist called Harvey Ball. It's evolved over the years both in aesthetic and popularity, and is now a popular culture phenomenon.
World Smile Day came about in 1999 to try and take the smiley face back to it’s origins of good will and good cheer, to keep it connected to human beings. The idea is to smile at someone, and receive a smile in return, to brighten up both your days!
Harvey Ball passed away in 2001, but he his legacy is one of the most well known symbols in the world.
So celebrate World Smile Day by keeping a sense of good will in your spirit today, remember you can always brighten someone’s day by simply giving them a compliment, helping them out with something, and of course, smiling at them. 😊
Happy World Smile Day!

What is Digital Dentistry?
The purpose of digital dentistry is to enable dental professionals to deliver treatment without the use of mechanical tools. Impression scanners and design software enable dental laboratories to significantly speed up the process of creating dental products, reduce the amount of manual work and result in a more predictable outcome for patient treatment with little or no human error. It can take as little as 40 minutes from the scan of the mouth, to the digital dental design, 3D printing and implementation into the mouth, and can enable patients to complete their treatment in a single visit! Consensus in the industry is clear, the future of dental devices is digital! Watch this space...

What Day is it Today? It's International Beer Day!Almost every culture in the world has brewed beer, dating back to ancient Babylonia and Mesopotamia. That's approximately 6000 years ago!Every year, Germany organises the biggest beer festival in the world, called Oktoberfest, regularly attended by around 6 million people, and it is the third most consumed drink in the world, after water, and tea. While most of us are likely looking forward to celebrating the weekend with a nice cold glass, be aware that beer can affect your teeth, with the carbonation turning to carbonic acid, which can wear your tooth enamel. To help combat this, alternate sips of beer with sips of water. This will help rinse the carbonic acid out of your mouth. Not only does this help protect your teeth, it also helps protect against dehydration. And if you can, brush your teeth 20 minutes after your last drink.Have a great weekend, and always remember to enjoy alcohol responsibly.
