We’re better together!

Collaboration is really important to me - coming together with others to share ideas, pool knowledge and build solutions. It’s a fabulous way to make change happen, plus it is wonderful working with (and having fun with) people with different perspectives and experiences.

Last week at Treo House in London a group of us got together to celebrate the successful delivery of our first production run.

Some of us were colleagues and some new friends but we all shared an interest in collaboration - topic we pondered with facilitation from Treo House’s Gemma. We also enjoyed a delicious supper, accompanied by vibrant discussion.

I’m fortunate to work in several teams across different projects and it was lovely to have five sixths of the Sanja Stories team present ( and - we were missing Abhishek but he has the good excuse of living in Jaipur!). We gave an informal talk about Sanja Stories regenerative philosophy and product, with the team and others modelling (rocking!) their new Sanjas. I’m loving my new indigo ones!

If you want to join the fabulousness, sign up for the next Sanja Stories production run on the Sanja Stories website .

It was great to catch up with quite a few of the team too - Kishore again, .lifestyle and .

If you want to explore collaboration and circularity more then sign up for the upcoming Summit in September, also taking place at Treo House - link in bio.

Thanks to for the fab photos and for funding them.

In 2017 Joanna Lumley wore one of our scarves on her TV documentary about India. We sold out almost overnight. I was overjoyed. Thank you Joanna. 🙏

Fast forward eight years. A well-known actor becomes one of our first ambassadors for When he shared his support, our following almost trebled. I was overjoyed again.

Same pattern. Different decade. Same gratitude.

What moves me most is that both of them were drawn to the work for exactly the best reasons. The values, the craft, the story — that's what resonated. People who care deeply about how things are made, and who they come from, find their way to this work. That never gets old. The reach came after, the values came first.

It also makes me think about the strangeness of visibility - how years of work can be 'hidden' until a light is shone on it. And of course about all the brilliant makers, projects and innovations out there that haven't yet found their champion. I hope my work helps the invisible to become more visible in some way.

Eight years on, still grateful for the visibility. Still building with the values.

On the final day of my trip to Zimbabwe for Circular Economy week last month, a few of us managed to spend an hour or so at the wonderful Up Market - a sort of farmers/craft market in Massdorp, Harare.

It was wonderful browsing the food stuffs, crafts such as wood work, beading, clothing and accessories, batik and lots more.

As well as the experience I also wanted to bring home local gifts for friends and family so was armed with a list!

I had a long cat with Enoch (1st picture) who works with 100% Zimbabwean cotton, some from , and creates batik art, clothing and accessories. I treated myself and others to a few of those items! (Facebook only).

It was lovely chatting with the stall holders and finding out how they make their items - one lady was knitting handbags as we watched!

My kitchen is much improved by the Zimbabwean cotton batik oven gloves and wooden salad servers and I hope my giftees enjoy their beaded animals, earrings, t shirts, hats and peanut butter…. (Yes I was very efficient in my shopping but the choice and atmosphere made it a pleasure.

You may remember this photo from a post a couple of years ago when I was telling you about my Desi Oon shoes! Desi Oon means indigenous wool, it comes from pastoralist communities in India.

I’d recently started working with from as part of a project with so I treated myself to this pink pair.

Fast forward to last September when Santosh brought suitcases of lovely shoes to the UK for our Interwoven events and kindly lent us some for our photoshoot (you can see pics on the Sanja Stories website!).

The upshot is that I have 5 pairs of Earthen Tunes Shoes with me in the UK and Santosh is happy for me to sell them to you. They retailed at £95 at the London events but we’ve agreed that they can go for £75 + postage (UK only) as there is such a small selection. You can see them in the second photo.

For sizing check the website but I sized down and mine fit perfectly (I am size 38 and ordered size 37) .

I have:
Light Brown 43
Blue 42
Rust 41
Yellow 37
Grey 36

Feel free to ask any questions - I love my Desi Oon shoes so just sharing the love!

When women inspire women it creates magic - energy, strength, sisterhood and so much more.

We had a wonderful evening as part of Creative Economy Week in Zimbabwe earlier this month - a panel of super inspiring women sharing their stories and experiences with an audience of, well mainly women!

The experiences were common to many of us, the outcomes were laughter, rage but also that feeling that comes from recognition that we can learn from each other and, in many cases, find ways around (or through) the challenges we often face.

The panelists were the amazing:
Nellie Tiyago, Amneh Shaikh-Farooqui , Dr Lillian
Chinyanganya, Tendai
Chitima and moderated by Farai Ncube.

The photo of me caught the most unflattering expression but showed how involved I was. Much more flattering pics of Winnie and Ritendo !!!

In Zimbabwe earlier this month as part of Creative Economy Week, I had the pleasure of connecting with the inspiring Christie and Gail from based at Victoria Falls.

Batoka works with local people creating beautiful jewellery, basketry and more, creating a social enterprise that has changed peoples’ lives.

As well as the story delivered so beautifully by Christie, I fell in love with these earrings created from snare wire used by poachers to trap wild animals.

Batoka has worked with many former poachers who are now earning a lot more as trained metal workers and jewellers. You can see some of them in these photos.

To my friends- please consider Batoka for your shops - they sell wholesale and I can link you up.

Tourism at Victoria Falls is being hit by the Middle East War currently which of course affects so many industries, including Batoka. The decisions of the few always affect the many in these cases.

There’s also photos of us admiring the jewellery, Amneh and I with Christie and my lovely earrings which I wore all week once they were mine!

Zimbabwe Creative Economy Week kicked off with an amazing opening ceremony.

A very spiritual spoken word performance by which touched the soul, followed by wonderful drummers . The beautiful costume worn by Ritendo showcases fabric and design from designer - inspired by the ancient Great Zimbabwe.

The evening was a wonderful opportunity to meet and chat with designers from the programme, local dignitaries, the team from Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda.

Great to connect and reconnect with Sevra, , and many more.

With thanks to our hosts British Council, the Swiss Embassy and

Zimbabwe so far has been amazing whirl of colour, learning and fabulous conversations!

I left London Heathrow on Friday evening for Dubai. After a very quick connection we boarded our flight to Lusaka then Harare which was due to leave at 9.15am. We then returned from the runway to the terminal and sat for two and a half hours before finally leaving. There was no WiFi so mercifully I was unaware of the horrendous situation happening so close by, but feel so grateful to have escaped it.

Arrived late Saturday in Harare with just enough time to try a local beer! On Sunday visited a local market before a welcome lunch arranged by - so lovely to meet the team!

On Monday we visited David Whitehead Cotton, hence my attractive headwear … I’ll share more about that when I get a moment - currently sitting waiting for a bus so grabbed the opportunity!

Looking forward to an interesting few days, learning, connecting (and reconnecting with fellow panellist from projects back ah years ago)

Also hoping to see a bit of Paris with Ashna and !

Please do get in touch if you are planning to be at the event.

Thank you to Alice Gras for inviting me and arranging everything. .

A project for Twixtmas - getting started on my mittens.

This was my crowdfund reward for backing the project to create yarn and products by collecting and combining the wool from several small farms around the London area. There are a number of different sheep breeds included.

Well done to Justine Lee and team for making the project happen.

I’ll share the final result when I get to it!
