🦷 A little bit of Berners Street history…

Have you ever wondered what Berners Street looked like before cars, traffic and modern Ipswich? 👀

This wonderful photograph dates from around 1900 and shows Berners Street looking north, complete with an Ipswich Co-operative Society delivery wagon making its way along the road.

In the distance, you can see East Suffolk Hospital, which was built in 1835, when this part of Ipswich would have been right on the outskirts of town.

Berners Street itself was named after the wealthy local Berners family. William Berners built Wolvestone Hall in 1770, and one of his descendants, Charles Berners, is said to have been the first person to drive a motorised vehicle through Ipswich. 🚗

And there’s an extra bit of history that makes this particularly special to us… ❤️

🏡 The building that houses our dental practice is over 250 years old!

So when you visit us, you're not just stepping into a dental practice — you're stepping into a building that has been part of the local landscape for more than two and a half centuries.

It’s fascinating to imagine what Berners Street looked like when our building was newly built, and how much the street — and the town — has changed since then.

📍 We’re proud to care for our patients from a building with such a long connection to the history of Ipswich.
